4 year old high temp but saying he's cold.

I have a 4 yr old boy who has a temp of 39.4c. He hasn't been himself all day, not eating and very tired/drowsy. He has just fallen asleep without milk (very unlike him). I've taken him to bed and he was shivering saying he's cold even though his temp is so high. I've given him another dose of calpol and he has a small fan in the corner of his room.

Last week he was in hospital with croup, he has gotten over it but still not recovered back to his normal self.

I'm not sure what to do as don't want him to have to wait for hours up hospital to be told he has fever. Anyone have any ideas?

The temperature is causing the shivering and making him feel cold even though he is not.

You really need to keep an eye on him, if he gets too hot he could start to fit. Take his clothes off to help him stay cool, no blankets and the fan to cool the room is good but not directly on him, if his feet are cold u can leave socks on. Lots to drink if possible. After the calpol time has run out take his temp again and give him nurofen if needed. I would put him in your bed so you can keep a close eye on him.

Remember you can always call 111 at anytime if your not happy.

Thing with temp if could be because of an infection which needs antibiotics or from a virus which will just pass. Do u have a walk in centre you can take him to?

Hope he's feeling better soon xx

Thank you for your reply! He can't have nurofen as he's asthmatic. He hasn't fully got over his croup from last week I don't think. His cough has gone but he hasn't been himself since. He has cold hands and feet are slightly warmer but his head and body are so hot. He's had calpol an hour ago and temp hasn't dropped at all. He's got very rosy cheeks even with cool room.

Thanks again. X

if his temp hits 40 you need to be thinking about 111 or even the hospital. my son had cold hand and feet and a temp of 39.4 very sleepy, off milk, was shivery but blazing hot. Took him to out of hours gp, got sent home. he had meningitis. We only got him there in the nick of time because my gut told me to ignore the Gp. he never got a rash, just usual flu symptoms. listen to your instincts. Better to be safe than sorry I've learnt now. Xx

Call 111 they should advise you what to do. As you say could just be the end of the croop. I would be concerned what will happen when the calpol wears off, as there's only so much he can have.

Good luck x

I have spoken to 111. I am waiting on a out of hours doctor to call me. I could be waiting up to 6 hours. His temp hasn't gone down but I've just managed to get him to have a sip of water. Hopefully we might get somewhere!

Thanks for all your help! Xx
