Afebrile Seizure in 12 month old

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask if any of you have ever experienced anything like this as its really playing on my mind.

My daughter has just turned 1 and recently had a vomiting and diarrhoea bug. She was sick in the night two days in a row followed by diarrhoea most of the day and night. She refused most food so was eating very little but still drinking water and milk.

Over 2 days she was perky and chatty, still playing and still acting normally

On the third day she was irritable and grumpy all day, she was also really tired and slept quite alot. After one nap we woke up up for water and she had a seizure.

It began with wide eyed staring and then she fell back onto the bed. Her arms and legs were straight and stiff, her hands clenched and her eyes rolled back in her head. It was the most scary moment of my life i thought i wss going to loose her.

We called an ambulance and in hospital she had a further seizure. Both times her temp was raised but not fever high (36.7 at hospital, 37.5 at home). Her blood tests and blood pressure were normal and she wasnt showing signs of dehydration.

The doctors called it an afebrile seizure and said they wouldnt do further tests unless it happened again.

Shes not vomited in the days after but still has alot of diarrhoea although it seems to be easing off a bit now.

Im terrified it will happen again and scared it could be epilepsy.

Any advice would be much appreciated

From what you are saying sounds more like febrile seizure rather than afebrile (especially if they're not doing further tests). Febrile seizures Are v common issue doesn't mean child will

Go on to have seizures later in life. Unfortunately there's no guarantee that it won't happen again In the future when I'll again just like it happened the first time. I'd have a look at NHS choices website and probably speak to your gp who should get a discharge letter from hospital

I haven't had this experience, but I do know that ferberile seizures are pretty commmon in small children and don't mean much at all. They really are due to them having a high temperature and when that comes down they stop. It's basically all to do with their size and issues in temp regulation. (It's one of the really common anti vaccines myths that these are dangerous. And it's those that tend to stoke up fear in parents)

Also re the epilepsy obviously you would be worried but as Roxanne has pointed out at this point it's unlikely. But I would also like to add, EVEN a diagnosis of Epilespy is not meccesaairly something to worry lots about. It's such a sliding scale and lots of people have very very easily controllable epilepsy and it gets in the way of very little.

Me and my sister both had febrile convulsions when we were younger (1-2 years old) but neither of us have had any type of fitting since. She is almost 18 and I am 24 x
