Morning sickness

Hi guys, just wondering did anyone take much time off work with morning sickness. I work in a children's hospital so it's not as easy for me just to run off to the toilet when needs be as sometimes I'm left alone with young babies etc. I tried going back into work today. Had one sip of water with my tablets (folic acid, vit D and anti sickness med) and within minutes was sick. I feel awful as I've already had two weeks off work but just feel as though I won't be able to give 100% which my job entails. Just worrying really and wanted some reassurance to wether I am doing the right thing?

Hiya, I'm also a registered nurse but I'm adult trained. I completely understand that the demands of the job make it difficult to go to the bathroom as required or indeed just take a time out when nausea becomes overwhelming.

With my first pregnancy I suffered terribly with morning sickness despite anti emetics, it resulted in me taking 4 weeks off work. That was how long it took before my sickness subsided to a point I could perform my duties again properly, if I'd have needed longer I'd have taken it.

With my subsequent pregnancies the sickness wasn't anywhere near as bad and I didn't require any time off work.

It's whatever's right for you and whether you can function in your role. My thoughts at the time were I was more of a burden to the team turning up and not being able to do my job properly, it was better they knew in advance I wouldn't be on duty and could roster accordingly.

Don't feel bad about having to take time out to take care of yourself.

Congrats on your pregnancy! x

Luckily I had no sickness. I did however take 8 days off work week 8-9 as I was extremely fatigued (sleeping 15+ hours/day). You know how ill you are and if whether you're well enough to work or not.

Hi. Yes, I also work in a public facing healthcare role and have had a grand total of about 10 weeks off due to severe nausea and vomiting. It started at week 6 and didn't really start to ease until week 16 for me, despite dietary changes and anti emetics. This is my first baby.

I felt bad about the time off in some respects but it would have been impossible for me to do my job (I see patients, one after the other, all day, on their own or in groups) and my employer wasn't exactly forthcoming with ideas for adaptations (in actual fact when I did return they suggested I do even more clinical work).

Sadly, my sickness has returned in later weeks and as a result I'm taking maternity leave at the earliest opportunity. I've had other health problems too in later weeks of pregnancy which haven't helped, such as low iron and thyroid, an ear infection, as well as the usual bad heartburn, exhaustion, back ache etc.. All in all, you just "know" if you are in a fit state to do your job, and I can honestly say I'm not.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

😄
