Hi all, I've just found out I'm expecting my first baby, I'm 5w1d and I'm dreading the 7 weeks until our 12w scan. I'm so scared something is going to go wrong :'( my DH doesn't understand my worries, anyone else feel the same? Any tips for getting through this time?

Hi EML84. Unfortunately its just a waiting game at the moment. Although its v stressful, worrying about it doesn't help either. This is my third pregnancy, the second ended in miscarriage earlier this year so I fully understand the worry you're feeling. I had a reassurance scan at 8 weeks this time and am just waiting for my 12 week one. Although it was nice to see the baby at 8 weeks and know it was still alive it hasn't stopped me worrying at all. After all, a scan is just a snapshot of your baby at that moment.

I personally try to ignore the fact I'm pregnant, difficult when u feel like poo. Book in with your midwife, look after yourself, eat healthy and get plenty if rest. The rest of it in gods hands. Think of the millions of babies that make it through these first weeks and take strength from the fact that we all feel as you do, your not alone xxxx

Haha, this is very true. As a midwife i see hundreds of babies born healthy and lovely 😊 i think i have too much knowledge sometimes!!

First of all, congrats! I'm 16 weeks pregnant with my first and I really know how you feel! Every time I had a twinge, I thought something was wrong, I had a habit of checking to see if I'd had a period or bleeding, I even took another test at 8 weeks! Believe or not,, those 7 weeks soon go! I found keeping busy helped and talking to girl friends helped too.

All you can do is try and relax and look after yourself. There's always the midwife, although I'm not the best person to advise this as I don't like to bother her for something I think silly. Good luck xxx

I worried for the whole 9 months continually googling 'if baby born at x weeks, will it survive', now I have a super bonny 1 year old and I still worry every day that he'll choke or something will happen in the night. I think it's part of being a mum! Once you've accepted babies are a worry, you're halfway there! All fingers and toes crossed for you x

Yep, I agree with other posters, hard not to worry with babies (especially first & b4 scan); particularly if you are mw yourself.

Some positive stories to help you:

2013 Sept - sister mc first at 5 weeks

2014 Jan - I mc first at 7 weeks

Nov 2014 - sister's baby boy born

April 2015 - my baby boy born

Sept 2015 - other sister's first pregnancy confirmed as 13 weeks 2 days

(Its twins & she is type 1 diabetic - we knew at 6 weeks as she has pregnancy clinic)

Hope this helps

Know what you mean Kiliz. I'm 25w and each week I say to myself well he's a bit bigger now so if anything goes wrong then he should survive. It's incredibly wrong to think like that but we can't help it when we worry so much. I'm now thinking just as long as I can get to 30 weeks and he should be ok. Not sure why but am much more nervous second time round, think I worry too much!

EML84, believe me the next few weeks will fly by! Book yourself in at one of the private places that are popping up everywhere for a reassurance scan or something similar however I would recommend that you check the 'sonographer' is medically trained, some of those places are run by people who have only done a day's course therefore 'reassurance scan' can be misleading. No offence intended to those that work there.

I've actually had a scan today as I've been getting quite a bit of pain (plus my mw is a close friend and knows how anxious i have been!) Sure enough there was a blob and a flicker of a heartbeat! Feeling much calmer!
