6 week old with a cold

Hi,

My LO has a cold and is struggling a little. Just wondering if you mums (and dads) have any advice on easing it for her? I am already using a wedge pillow under the mattress for her reflux and have tried sitting her in a steamy bathroom but that didn't seem to help. Can I use any rubs or oils that you know of?

Hi kat, there's a balm called snuffle babe that suitable I think. I sympathise as my little boy had a cold at 4 weeks. There's not much u can do as they're so little. Propping the mattress or bed should help and steamy baths like u say. A nasal aspirator to suck the snot out (lovely!) and maybe some saline drops to soften it first. Hang in there, they bounce back really quick but u may have several sleepless nights xxxx

Yep, I agree - my little one had cold at like 6-8 weeks old (is 5 months today); was advised by docs to get saline nasal drops from pharmacy & by friends to get snuffle babe (also from pharmacy - is a tiny pot of Vicks style stuff to rub on chest & throat - really helps @ nite time)

Good luck 😀

My ten week old is suffering as well. I've just used a nasal spray called Sterimar, Nasal Hygiene. It's the best out there in my opinion. My firstborn had a lot of colds and Al the other sprays run out really quickly and the costs add up, plus they only work when you hold them upright so you end up getting very frustrated when you need to try and squeeze the stuff in tiny wriggling noses, in newborns you should do that with their heads sideways as far as I'm aware.

Also as mentioned, definitely get one of those nasal suckers! Sounds disgusting, looks disgusting but works a treat if there's a lot of snot!!

Ps: personally I wouldn't use snuffle babe or baby Vicks stuff on such a tiny baby with such sensitive skin, but that's just me personally, I'm not sure what the HV would recommend about it.

We used Calpol nasal spray and raised the end of the crib with our little boy. It worked quite well... I don't think anything works completely!

My lo had a cold at 3wks (he's 9months now) we where told by the pharmacist that you can't use any rubs or oils till baby is 3 months old as it so strong it can burn the nose regardless of what the packet says, in fact she refused to sell us anything other than calpol saline nasal spray. As hard as it is you just have to be patient.

Thank you everyone. I will look out for those nasal sprays. Have tried one but as you say it's hard to do when they are fussing. She's doing ok, very clingy and unsettled but we will get through it :-)

Try some Vicks or olbas oil in boiling water under the cot. I know my friends with toddlers do that. One of my friends put a couple of drops of breast milk up the babies nose, and that worked surprisingly well. X
