Hi all

I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant. I had a call yesterday to say that my first scan will be the 17th November. I will only be 10 weeks then. I did say this to the lady on the phone but she said that would be ok. Has anyone else had a dating scan this early?

Thanks

Yeah it's fine :) It's standard practice to have a dating scan at around 12 weeks, it can be slightly earlier or later depending on how busy the PCT is or how sure of the conception date you are. Congratulations!

Hi there,

I'm currently 6 weeks with my second.

It depends what scan it is.

The dating scan is quite early on and just to confirm how far exactly you are. As my first boy is only just turning 1, I've not had regular periods yet since having had him so the GP and I don't quite agree on conception date, he reckons I'm seven weeks but I did ovulation tests so am confident it's only 6...

So I'll have a dating scan to determine how far exactly I am and that's easiest to determine very early on. Apparently that's done around 7-8 weeks but I'm sure there are slight differences between GPs. 10 weeks almost seems a bit late for me.

The actual 'proper' first scan where they check on development and things like Down Syndrome and take blood is between 11-13 weeks, I think at 10 weeks it's too early for that. If you weren't given information sheets on what's done differently (or in general, when what is done) I'd ask the GP for it, I can't attach my sheet here unfortunately.

All the best!

Silke

Thanks, I think in our area the 12 week normal scan is a dating scan and then the 20 week scan is the check for any problems with the baby. Then various blood tests in between. My little boy has just turned one too so looking forward to him having a new friend to play with.

How funny, so our two little ones will be pretty much the same age ;-)

I'm finding it hard at the moment being there for my boy as I'm back at work, SO exhausted and have morning sickness - all day long.

I guess they might call it differently in various areas. But I'm not sure that at 10 weeks they can do all the developmental checks that they need to do? Like checking the gap (or fluid?) in the space at the spine for Downs etc?

But rather too early than too late, I guess! I had a very late scan with my first one and kept wondering whether all is well.. IF you're having yours too early they'll just need you to come back and you get to see your little one again ;-)

Hi, this is my first pregnancy so I can't answer your question, but my dating scan is on the 17th too! I'll be 12 weeks 2 days approx then. My midwife said the dating scan can be done anytime from 10 to 14 weeks, so its probably just when they have an appointment. X

Just found the 'small print': it says the first scan needs to be done between 11+5 and 13+5 weeks. Apparently that's a national thing...

You know that you are well within your rights to decline a scan?

Just because they sent you a scan date you do not have to have it, you can ring up and cancel or post-pone.
