Flucloxacillin - horrible taste! - Little man not impressed!!

Little man is on the above antibiotic for his infected eczema..

Pharmacist warned me it tastes awful but Hugo took the rotavirus vaccine so well thought he would be ok.. well he spits it out, screams and fights when I give it to him! :( I do it tiny bits at a time but he still gets upset and resists! I tried a drop and it really is yucky!!

Anyone got any tips to make it easier for him, or is it just a matter of battling through fir the next 6 days!

X

How old is he?

Try going back to ur g.p and asking for the banana flavour one it's much nicer if it's for skin infections then can't see why not dr fluffy is the one to ask though x

He is only 10 weeks!! I'll try ask for another flavour! X

I dint think they do that particular one in any other flavour is disgusting isn't it. .. but they do penicillin well amxoycillin in the banana flavour but different ones do different things like some are better for throat infections. .. if they can't give u a different one try and ask for an antibiotic cream think it's called fucidin cream my little one used to have it cos he constantly picked an area of excema and it always got infected just just thinking of alternatives for u x

Fluclox is a much better antibiotic for staph aureus skin infections - bugs develop resistance to fusidic acid really quickly - the cream is the only time it's prescribed on it's own for this reason...

I'll just have to keep going, it's only for a week and I'd this dosent work, he will be given a steroid cream! Just want it to get better now!! Xx

Was about to suggest the same. *edit: apparently it's not the recommended route. peerdiagnosis.com/kidney-in...

No it's not - affects absorption, but some antibiotic is better than none...

...tge only thing is the milk should not be warmer than room temp...

Oh are you allowed to do that! Bottle says give on empty stomach, an hour before or 2 hours after a feed!

Hi DrFluffy

awwwrrh! poor thing

I remember the G.P prescribed this medicine for my son when he had something like a skin infection to the after-effects of having chicken-pox

I must admit I was very impressed with the way the medicine he gave us as it seemed to act very quickly to stop the itching & etc....

I personally dont remember the flavour of it ( as I was about 12wks pregnant at the time) but the colour was yellow & tasted very sweet ( alot like calpol)

I dont know if this medicine comes in different flavours but I guess you could ask your G.P if Lil hugo is really not havin it'

xx

The stuff he has is bright pink and tastes so bitter, I'd describe it as like you know when you have been sick so much you just have the acid stuff left.. it's like that!! X

YUK!

Considering you are using a medicine syringe you could try mixing maybe a Lil' bit of water to the medicine & place the syringe on the back of his tongue. it may help also take the "bitter-ness" away lightly

It sound horrible I know but at least this way you know he's definitely swallowed it

You could also try a syringe of formula/EBM, then the Fluclox, then formula/EBM X

I'd be a bit worried then he'll probably puke everything back-up again, But it's worth a try

Sounds awful but might be better off not giving it in tiny bits and just giving the full dose all at once and getting it as far back in his mouth with his head tipped back obviously without choking him! Maybe easier said than done though! Don't feel bad your only trying to help him!!
