Hi, found out we're pregnant and went to see my GP yesterday. He didn't give me any information or take my blood pressure etc as said he didn't have time and that I should book in again when I am 8 weeks - in 3 weeks time. I'm confused and apprehensive and not sure if this is normal?!
Any advice much appreciated

He said he didn't have time?? I honestly feel so lucky with the medical care I've been offered, some of the stories from this site make the mind boggle!
Firstly, don't worry - you're not missing out on any care as its often 8 weeks before pregnant ladies are seen by a professional (has been the case with both of my pregnancies). If I were you I would find out if you can register directly with your midwife unit. The process varies from surgery to surgery but in my case I'm able to ring the midwife unit directly to arrange a booking appointment. If you don't know where your midwives are based, call the receptionist at your GP's who should be able to tell you where to find them, and whether a referral from your doctor is necessary or not (hopefully not!)

been through exactly the same thing this week, book an appointment with the midwife or leave you details for the midwife to contact you depending on what they do in your area. congratulations and good luck
Go see another gp bbe but they don't check ur blood pressure at this stage It will be ur midwife x
I'd ring ur g.p receptionist and say u need a booking app for pregnancy and they should go through it all with u and then at 8 weeks u should have a booking app with ur midwife dont be fobbed off x
Get a form from the receptionist to fill out for your midwife and then she will contact you OR the receptionist will make a booking appointment for you when you are around 8 weeks.
hey, the dr didn't do anything apart from ask me when my last period was and told me my aprrox due date. You will need to contact the midwife and have a booking app around 9 weeks and they will do blood pressue etc, the dr was pretty useless when I went and I know if I have another child unless I have probs I wont go and see him will go straight to midwife. dnt worry although saying he didn't have time was pretty bad. x
Thanks for your help everyone, the receptionist was just as bad, she snorted and said you don't see a midwife until your 16 weeks! I think I may look at changing my GP!
These GP's seem to forget we pay for their wages. If I was you, I would complain about your surgery and go and change to another if that's possible as you will have to go there regularly when you are further along. I say that as from around 22 weeks, where I live you see the midwife or GP at your doctors surgery every 2 - 3 weeks until you are due with the odd appointment at hospital.
I seem to be lucky with mine GP; when I first went at 5 weeks; he took my blood pressure, told me what to expect, prescribed folic acid and made all the arrangements for the booking appointment with the midwife at the hospital.
Jeez, it's a stressful enough time as it is without getting the advice you need from the people who are supposed to give it!

It's unfortunate that you come across some really uncaring people in the care settings, I had a few of them but I decided that now am pregnant and I will be having my first scan at 6 weeks because I opt to go private, where I will have a peace of mind. I know is not everyone in the position to go private but if you can then I would advise you to do so. With that been said when I had my last miscarriage and I went to the hospital, I felt as if they were doing me a huge favor, I had was to plead for a scan when the doctor telling me that that fact that I am losing water then there's no reason to do a scan because I am going to lose the baby anyway, that's the exact words he uses. I had was to wait three hours for a bed by then infection starts sets in, by the time I got on the ward, infections start spreading rapidly that's when I had the liquid antibiotic to prevent blood poisoning. In the end they did looked after me and show they care but that was when everything was over with, too late. I know if you are going to have a miscarriage there's nothing much can be done but caring for someone in that difficult time is very important. I know the nhs have their hands full and they have some very good and caring doctors and nurses but I believe it's too much red tapes that is causes them to act in that manner.
Just check with ur local hospital midwife etc of u can self register u shud c a midwife at 8-10 weeks for booking in and book 12 week scan if ur not sure ring around the local hospital ask for antenatal unit and speak to someone there. Good luck
I took a test when I was 4 days late, booked a GP appnt for a few days later. He said I didnt really need to see him and referred me to the midwife. I called to make my first booking in appnt which was at 7 weeks (earliest one available).
Because this is my first (and possibly last!) I didnt know what to expect and I thought that they gave you another 'confoirmation' pregnancy test, but as soon as you say you did a Clearblue preg test, thats good enough for them and they take your word for it
u shud see the midwife between 8-10 weeks for ur booking app which will just be going through paper work and urine sample and she will check blood pressure and weight (thts what happened at mine anyway at 9 weeks) then she will need to book u in for ur scan, I saw her twice before 16 weeks so ignore tht comment. Make sure u get to see midwife and if it means sorting it out urself, so be it, x
16 weeks is far too late you should be seen before 12 weeks. change your GP and book in to see midwife. You should report the surgery to the local health authority for lack of care!
