There is quite a few older mums on here. Have you told your other children about the baby or is it still a secret?

It is still a secret. I am sure they will be very happy about it all. They would all like another brother or sister in the family. I have 2 girls aged 18 and 16 and a boy aged 9. I am more worried about the pregnancy and the baby and possible complications. :((

It's natural to worry with pregnancy what ever age you are. The hospital will do all the neccassary checks for you to put your mind at rest.

I'm a little younger but had my 2nd baby at 42 (had my first at 28). This was my 6th pregnancy so I didn't have any tests, I was just happy to be having a baby. I think being an older mum you do worry about the things that can go wrong, but I think the majority of the time things are OK.....

I found the pregnancy a lot harder on my old bones and I'm pretty tired most of the time but it's so worth it!!

One of the advantages of being an older mum is patience, empathy, being a little mellower (is that even a word...)! and relishing every minute as you know how fast time flies!

Hi, I'm currently 27 weeks pregnant and will be 41 when baby is born. I've found the treatment I've had from both my midwife at the GP surgery and also at the hospital has been very positive with very little focus on my age. I expected them to shake their head and list everything i was at greater risk of! At my first appt at the hospital they did the usual checks and was identified as low risk. The nuchal screening test for downs did put us in the high risk category but we'd expected that and already decided that we didn't want the amnio. I have no other children so can't compare pregnancy when I was younger but I think what ever age you are, it is a worrying and sometimes frightening time. I did pay for private scans early on because of a previous miscarriage and that helped me manage the long wait until the 12 week scan. We had one at 7weeks and then another at 9 and a half.

Many congratulations on your pregnancy. Try to focus on keeping yourself fit and health. What an exciting start to married life : )

Thank you for your comments. Am very worried at the moment because I've had some bleeding and have been to,d by the Gp to rest for a couple of days and then go back to see her early next week. The waiting is excruciating! How soon can I have an early scan and how much was it privately?

in reply to Truckmuck

I had a tiny bit of spotting at about 4weeks and was given a scan 2days later, but could only see the egg sac, so that's why I had another scan at 7weeks so they could see more. If you're worried they should scan you. I'm surprised they didn't, it will put your mind at ease. Good luck

I paid for a private scan at 10 weeks - I think u could have it from 6 weeks. It cost £120 and well worth the money to put your mind at rest. I think u can have an early Nhs scan from 5 week tho so definitely ask your gp or midwife. Good luck xx

Hi there, congratulations 😀 I too am 46 and 7weeks pregnant. I have one other son who is now 25!!!!! It's all very scary, I had an early scan yesterday and all is well, we saw the heartbeat which is very reassuring. It's natural to be scared as we are older but if you're healthy you should be fine. I'm optimistic and keeping positive. Wishing you lots of luck and health. X
