What if it comes from your own family? πŸ™‚ How do you handle it? πŸ€”

Im pretty sure I didn't handle it the right way, when I went off on my mother, when all of a sudden she had a thought πŸ˜πŸ€£πŸ˜‚

I used to get that often when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

There was always some new miracle and they meant well by telling me about it.

That didn't stop me from being ungrateful for their well meant advice.:D

As for MS, I don't usually get helpful cures and new miracle drug du jour advice from anyone.

Well let me tell you about so an so and the cure! 😁 You have to DO IT! 😐 πŸ€£πŸ˜‚ πŸ€—πŸ’•πŸŒ

I've also heard interesting comments regarding what diabetes will do to me.

33 years later, I still have both my legs, d@mmit! :D

Some people try to be helpful. others have a different agenda.

Right? Can they predict the future? Im pretty sure I would be dead by now... 🀣

I don't mind helpful... But think you know more about my MS than I do! I don't think George or the black hole would like me coming off my meds, and eating weedsπŸ˜”πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ€—πŸ’•πŸŒ

I know exactly what you mean! My Mother used to tell me I had no reason to feel/be depressed. My friend so and so, now she had plenty to be depressed about, but I didn't. I tried explaining the imbalance of chemicals in the brain...her mind was made up...I was faking this depression thing and taking all those pills the MS Neurologist prescribed, so it would somehow reflect on her long ago parenting skills?????? I just needed to STOP it, NOW!

It’s not MS, doctors don’t always know get a second opinion. I wonder what they would say if I showed them my brain and spine mri with lesions. I change subject or walk away.

Jesmcd2 profile image

That's a GREAT IDEA! A 2nd 3rd your opinion! πŸ˜” Actually though, My poor neuro has done every single test at least 3 xs , before he figured out im a freak of nature 🀣 It's horrible 😭! πŸ€—πŸ’•πŸŒ

My uncle tells me regularly that if I'd just see a different doctor, have more tests, and take more drugs, all my problems would go away. I just nod and change the subject.

Falalalala, my daughter's been Type 1 for 20 years now. We both still get comments and advice. "So, your mother fed you lots of sugar when you were little?" "If you'd just lose weight, you'd be fine." "Have you tried acupuncture?"

I get that a lot. Some of it from my sister who tends to believe every conspiracy theory out there. I try very hard to patiently explain to her how and why that particular theory is bunk. She's getting better at dismissing them...or at least not telling me about them...πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

From co-worker:

Just get stung by honey bees...i gave him a huge eye roll and several snarky commentsπŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ˜ˆπŸ˜ˆ

Just get simple surgery to fix it...I gave him a confused look and told him to describe to me what he thought MS was. He described scoliosis.πŸ€“πŸ€“

From Uber driver:

Just do yoga...I gave her a huge eye roll,πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„ explained that yoga might help with some symptoms but is not a cure...she told me that with my attitude it wouldn't help me at all...she got several snarky comments and and bad review from me.🀬🀬🀬🀬

The list as we all know too well goes on...

Jesmcd2 profile image
Jesmcd2CommunityAmbassador in reply to Peruzzot

Oh yes, I have read the honey bee one somewhere!πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

Now, hang on.. I asked my neuro when he was going to do the surgery on me, when he told me I had it. πŸ˜πŸ˜”πŸ€£

I saw the bee treatment thing on tv years ago.

I have been stung many times since then (not on purpose) and it did make me move fast.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

wolfmom21fl profile image
wolfmom21fl in reply to Peruzzot

the honey bee therapy is for certain types of pain. It reduces inflammation in the body among other things, and acts to help reduce some of the symptoms of MS, ALS, arthritis RA among other things. It is NOT a cure tho. I have never had it done so I have no idea if it works but I know someone who has it done regularly for her arthritis and she swears by it

Humbrd profile image

my late sister had the bee stings done 15 or so years ago. Didn't do anything, nothing.

After reading all the replies on this I am so grateful that I didn't have to go through any of that. I actually have just the opposite problem. My mother n law thinks I'm on my death bed & should just sit around the house, do my stretches & pray for healing. She's always trying to get people to help me when we are out somewhere. First of all, I don't need help, I get around just fine, with no cane, walker, or wheelchair. I can walk on my own two feet, sometimes I walk like I'm drunk but I'm upright. Her heart is in the right place but sometimes her brain takes a vacay without telling her.πŸ€—

My Dad, in the best of intentions, wanted me to try hyperbolic chamber therapy in an attempt to cure my M.S., and was willing to pay for it! I did research, and talked to my Neurologists, and it was a lot of money and little chance of having any effect it was told by everyone. But was good hearted and concerned. My mother? Well she never understood anything I ever said, thinking I'd just get over it. Tired? Just go to bed sooner, or take a nap. She told me she got tired too, and she was how many years older, so... Anyway, my Dad did so many unimaginable things in his life. He beat cancer. He beat flat-lining multiple times in another event. And the surgeries.... So my Dad I will always remember looking up to him. My Mother, not so much.
