MSAA can help you out a lot? If it were me I would wait on attorney unless denied benefits. Main thing you need is doctors saying he is totally disabled and can’t work. Good luck and prayers are with you and your family 👍🙏🙏 Ken 🐾🐾

Just to add to the previous comments, the more medical documentation you have the better chances you have of getting Social Security Disability status without having to use a lawyer to repeal a denied decision.

I applied as a requirement to apply for medical retirement from my job. If you go to the social security website Ssa.gov you can complete the application online. All you have to do is create a login and you can see what his disability benefit would be.

A lot also depends on the state. I have 2 disabled sons. One is physically disabled and one is mentally disabled. Each one has to be on a different waver through two different agencies. My physically disabled son is on a waiver through Aging and In Home Services. Don'tet the name fool you. They help people of all ages. (The Bureau of Developmental Disabilities - BDDS - is for mentally disabled.) His case manager should be able to point things out to help. SSI is helpful. My sons each get just under $800 per month. If they get a job they are allowed to earn money and retain SSI. Earnings should be under a dollar amount. Voc Rehab is good. If he can still drive but needs hand controls, or whatever to help him do that, VR will pay for the alterations to his car.

Keep asking questions of these people! And I agree, MSAA is a great place to start the ball rolling.

I am sorry to hear about your son. I also have secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and I’ve been on Social Security disability for about four years. The number one piece of advice I would give you is to hire an attorney. It doesn’t really cost you anything and by law the attorneys fee is a set amount.the fee is limited to 25% of the past-due benefits you are awarded, up to a maximum of $6,000. Past due benefits means that If you apply October 1 but don’t get approved until March 1 you will still get paidRetroactively from October. Also once you start applying the clock is ticking and if you miss deadlines you will get nothing. The lawyers will keep track of all of it. Also a lot depends on how well your doctor writes his/Her report. When I filed my lawyers told me it could take up to two years. I was approved in two weeks. My lawyer said it was because of what my doctor wrote. Good luck and I hope this was helpful. If you live in New York I can give you the name of the attorneys I used.
