Face is burning after Mri today.

Had MRI of my head today, and while in the machine my lips, cheeks and chin started to feel like they were burning! I've been home about 8 hrs now and it still burns. Idk What to do, i told the technician and he said he had never heard of that before! How can a technician who's job is this machine not have heard of mri burning? I did not know this was possible but he should have! Is my face going to have scars? Am I gonna wake up on the morning with sores or blisters?

Maybe notify your MD... does the ordering doc know? Did you have any contrast? Do you have any allergies? I think the tech should’ve notified the physician right away.

No, i will definitely call tomorrow though. I also wore make up, and chapstick, but I didn't know not to, i asked the nurse before hand and she said there was no things to not do, like if you go for a mammogram they tell ya not to wear underarm deoderant.

Was Gadolinium administered and if so, do you have any allergies to that? I’ve never heard of restrictions with makeup prior to MRI? If you think you’re having an allergic reaction, it’s best to get it treated right away because these meds take time to be flushed out of system. Maybe adequately hydrate yourself for now, if you have normal kidney functioning.

The tech didnt say what iy was, he just 1/2 way through gave me a needle in the arm then put me back in

I did have contrast. I don't have any allergies, i did have a panic attack and get dizzy and the tech said it was because of that. Then he showed me out

Sorry you had a panic attack...yes, one can get numbness and tingling from anxiety, but you’re talking about lingering effects. A panic attack should last no more than about half an hour. Allergies can happen at any time in a person’s life and at any time throughout the course of any therapy...in this case, administered meds possibly related to diagnostic test. Food for thought. Safety is always first. Your doc is there to keep you safe. You may want to contact on-call MD. I know I would without hesitation.

Also see my notes below regarding possible side effects to Gadolinium, if that’s what you were administered. Side effects are not considered a true allergic response. Hope this helps. 🙂

wow never heard of this and I have had lots of mris with contrast, keep is informed if you would. Scaring I do doubt, it is a nerve illness you know.

Msallison...I can see you’re very concerned...truth is no one here can diagnose...it’s just not safe...your MD is getting paid to keep you safe...I would make good use of that and not feel inhibited about calling. There’s always the option of the ER should you experience any problems with facial swelling say of the lips, tongue, nose..if you exhibit any difficulty swallowing or breathing, any redness or rash, itching...or any swelling anywhere, nausea, vomiting. This is called an anaphylactic reaction (true allergy) and requires immediate attention.

Also: Gadolinium may cause side effects in some people but these are usually mild and short lasting. Some of the more common side effects include injection site pain, nausea, vomiting, itching, rash, headache and parasthesia (abnormal skin sensation, such as prickling, burning or tingling).”

Thank you, yes the burning has calmed down, they told me to put burn cream on it. And after hurting pretty bad last night, today got alot better, my right eye is still sore and dry, but the burning on my face is alot better.

Glad its getting better. Sounds like you had a reaction to the contrast. Would definitely let your neuro know if you haven't already.
