Benefits of eating tomatoes

I recently learned this:

Eating tomatoes helps your skin, hair, eyes and has lots of vitamins in them. I love Campari tomatoes.

Does anyone else eat tomatoes?

My veggie garden mostly consists of tomatoes. I haven't tried the Campari tomato but I usually try to grow a variety I haven't tried before. Black Russians were pretty tasty but looked revolting.Pineapple tomatoes were large and mild. I was given some Orange Roussollini seeds so I will try them this year.

Black Russian tomatoes? I never heard of them before. Good to know in case I can't get my Campari tomatoes.

I love tomatoes. They're supposed to help the guys ward off prostate cancer. So my hubby and son's eat a lot of them to.

I've got cherry tomatoes growing in a pot on my apartment patio. Already got 3 tomatoes on the plant with a few more blossoms. I might be eating good here in a couple of weeks if it doesn't turn cold again.

Yes, I also heard it may help prevent cancer.

It never really got cold here in South Carolina. The plant is still growing from when I planted it last year. I was clipping out the dead stuff last week when I noticed the 3 little knobs that had just started. They're good size now and should start turning red soon.😄

Lucky you! I love tomatoes, especially the big beefsteaks that fit on a slice of bread.

Peruzzot in reply to falalalala

Love those to. But I don't think they would grow well in a pot.

falalalala profile image
falalalala in reply to Peruzzot

You'd probably need a very big pot. I have grown San Marzanos in a 12" pot. They're like large Romas

I got them as a gift and I had them in a 12 inch pot there was had winds and it was blown off the side porch and the pot was broken. I put it in another pot but my husband clipped it so short and it never came back.

I saw one at out water department and that one was up to my hips about 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. A very beautiful plant.

I love tomatoes. When I was growing up our backyard garden was an acrea. My favorite was eating sugar peas as I was picking them off the vine or digging up a couple extra carrots to wash off with the hose and chomp into. There are no other carrots that compare to ones that fresh. Baked butternut squash is to die for (with lots of butter...no brown sugar needed).

Stop all this talk about tomatoes, home grown. We haven't seen above freezing in??? forever. I run 6 - 8 varieties every summer in large pots on my patio, and bring in certain spices to use all winter, but they have to tolerate my home in winter, which is quite cold most of the day and all night. I now wear long underwear, and multiple layers, inside, with even more outside? To think???... all those decades with M.S. & DMT's, I wore a windbreaker all winter here, adding only a sweater when temps dipped below zero.....Okay, getting off topic?... Tomatoes!...

My local produce store has great tomatoes all winter! 2 - 3 varieties of tiny tomatoes alone winter, plus..... My fridge is always stocked with them. But as a cancer buster??? I've been eating them nearly every day for decades. (Minimally they are great in salads,...) But from my long tracked PSA testing (for prostate cancer) as all the males in my family have already dealt with prostate cancer,... some died from it, the rest also with prostate cancer, died from other causes, so with my rocketing elevated PSA, and per my doc's advice, after much mental suffering, I was all ready for the knife after doc said it was time to decide and do something, due to rapid acceleration that started a couple years ago. I did research, and first off quit any testosterone boosting supplements to fight off my low T and E.D., (wait right there!!! I just found something for the latter, L-Arginine "for heart health" and E.D.,...does it work??? Too soon to tell....Laid off peanuts and cashews which are linked to the big C, made up by switching to other nut varieties (peanuts are cheap though...,oh well), and started a juice glass (8oz) of pomegranate juice EVERY morning. My PSA has gone down to levels decades ago! And that's 2 like testings since the change. Okay, I also use medical cannabis for pain and fatigue, and that's supposed to be cancer fighting too? In fact, there's many who claim to fight cancer using nothing other than the medical cannabis, in lieu of anything else. So, either which way, even my doc agrees, no need to fear the scalpel now!

So those of you attempting to ward off prostate C, or the big C in general, keep up with the tomatoes, but try the rest? It's working for me!

Did I really just tell the whole world about my....? I make up for it! And I'm working on it!

lbenmaor profile image
lbenmaor in reply to MarkUpnorth

Good to know you realize the importance of including tomatoes in your diet.

Did you get your medical cannabis on line or through your Dr.?

Best,

Leslie

MarkUpnorth in reply to lbenmaor

My neurologist steered me to it via the medical channels, before it was legal in Illinois, based on reports from patients across the country. I lived with the pain & sleepless nites, with the thought of cutting off my burning feet for years, so I showed up in line day 1 of legal canabis in Illinois. CBD from hemp really wasn't readily availabe back then.

I find high CBD low THC for pain works best. And from cannabis much better than from hemp. THC works for fatigue, but limits you to not being able to drive. Luckily I have a chaufer (My wife) so I can fight fatigue more often without breaking that cardinal rule, driving impaired.

Just so you know, peanuts aren't really nuts. They're actually a type of soy bean.

MarkUpnorth profile image
MarkUpnorth in reply to Peruzzot

Yep, they grow in the ground, not from a tree, but when you go to at a no nut facility, due to allergies, which is the worst potential "nut" of all? You got it, there are probably more allergies to peanuts than any other. But, you're right!

And Tomatoes aren't vegetables, and eggs aren't diary.....

Want a really really weird nut? Love Nuts are from from the Seychelles islands off of Africa. You really need to look this one up. Saw it on a program just the other day, the female nut, which can weigh 30 pounds or more, looks like a women's anatomy down under, the male, like a man's, all just bigger. A type of coconut. Speaking of, Is a coconut a nut??? It grows on trees...

Here is one source for a possible explanation why not peanuts, I saw found no peanuts researching prostate cancer, but this may be clearer? foodforbreastcancer.com/amp...

Peruzzot in reply to MarkUpnorth

I've seen photos of the love nuts before. Those are just weird. Coconuts most people claim is a nut but a few people have tried to tell me it's a fruit.

As for the tomatoes not being a vegetable we'll just have to agree to disagree. Where I come from it's not a fruit.😊

Actually tomatoes are a nightshade fruit and not good for inflammation, similar to veggies like eggplant.

lbenmaor profile image
lbenmaor in reply to TwoFacesofMS

Where did you learn that?

Leslie

TwoFacesofMS profile image
TwoFacesofMS in reply to lbenmaor

Working in science and medicine. And it’s a simple Google search if you’re paying attention to what you eat.

lbenmaor profile image
lbenmaor in reply to TwoFacesofMS

I did a search on the computer and it told me it helps your skin, hair, vision and reduces your blood pressure.

Lilith08 profile image
Lilith08 in reply to TwoFacesofMS

From what I have read over the past two years, nightshades are a *possible* source of inflammation, if you happen to be one of those people who are sensitive to them. Even for those people, some find that they can tolerate one nightshade but not another.
