Massage & yoga- calling experienced MSers

It’s been a little bit more than a year since I’ve been diagnosed with RRMS & on Copaxone, which my dr. Thinks is not strong enough (another topic another day)

My symptoms go from my rib cage on the right to my knee on the right.I’m still learning my new body. When I do a yoga stretch too far, my hip gets buzzing with activity. When I get deep tissue massage, it’s the same thing. I asked my neurologist about it, he just said it’s my body talking to itself. Do these activities make my MS or symptoms worse? Are these things to be avoided in favor of gentle stretch & massage? Thanks, RM

The MSAA recommends yoga so I’m sure they wouldn't if it was harmful.

As for massage what type of massage are you doing? You may want to try Therapeutic massages I would get them and I felt great afterwards

Thanks for your response. Yoga for sure is great for anyone, especially MSers. It’s the deep stretch that gives me activity in my hip. Maybe I need to be more gentle.

I’ve done many types of massage, and the deep tissue seems to be a bit too aggressive. But, I really feel like it helps with some of walking muscles to loosen them up. It’s hard to tell with so many variables changing all the time.

Perhaps yoga and massage are causing your body temp to rise a little and bringing on symptoms. Does the buzzing go away shortly after when you cool down? If so, probably not a problem. Maybe do things to stay cooler during, drink ice water, lower room temp etc

Yoga is great for us. But it could also do a lot of damage if not done properly. What kind of yoga do you do?

Restorative or gentle yoga

That doesn't make any sense! Maybe ask your doctor. But deep tissue massage can be dangerous too - the only time I had it, it left my back black and blue for weeks.
