My PCP put me on melatonin. Even though it helps me sleep, I was shocked to read this article and will only take it from now on if I can't sleep in the middle of the night.

Here is the article:

As with any medicine or supplement, it's best to do your own research and ask your doctor. Thanks for the alert about possible problems with melatonin.

Yes, except it was my Primary Care Provider who is an excellent M.D. that ordered it.

It is a legitimate supplement that does work for some people. It isn't meant for continuous use. I never found it helpful, myself, but some here do take it with some success. No medicine works the same for everyone, that's for sure.

Thank you for sharing. These are serious side effects, I would absolutely check with the doctor before taking it. Just like with any supplement, I would also ask the doctor or pharmacist for best quality - there's so much supplement crap out there with tons of additives like gum and sugar that are not good for the MS patient.

We need our own research in addition, since it was ordered by my Primary Care Provider. Her clinic also carries it.

interesting advice from your PCP, my Psychiatrist told me to never take melatonin so I quit taking it. Thanks for the post and link

My old Neuro told me to take it when I couldn't sleep, no electronics or tv in the bedroom, and turn my clock so that the light wasn't shining on me. The melatonin worked at first but stopped working. I didn't need to take it every night. My PCP wrote me a script for a sleep med that worked but had to be upped last year but I have not needed it lately :) I have it just in case now :)

I thought my insomnia was caused by mercury poisoning, so I was taking melatonin pretty liberally. But maybe it's just MS. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! I don’t think any sleep aid should be taken nightly 😵

I tried it again, after reading someone here takes 30mg, and found some success with it, but it’s not as reliable for me as DXM.

I wish I could just go jog, that always made for great sleeping!

I think it should be taken only on as-needed basis. And you do get used to it. I think the key is not to stop producing it yourself.
