Gardens, what do you have sprouted? ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ‡

Last evening, as I was day dreaming about what I want in my as yet unplanted garden, I wondered how many of us have seen how our yummy grapes ๐Ÿ‡ start out. So here is a picture of ours, we have 5 varieties, growing in tubs, hopefully to be planted in the yard after harvest. The picture shows the buds on the left, the ever so tiny flowers on the right. Whatโ€™s in your gardens!

You may want to try a container garden, on a small patio or even and indoor planter in a sunny window. It's so peaceful to tend and watch something you made grow.

I have planted tomatoes, bell peppers, marigolds, impatients & hostas. My roses are blooming like crazy that I planted last year. I have already had daffadols, lilly of the valley and irises blooming. The late freeze we had at the end of April, tried to kill everything but they were troopers & didn't die. I cut the roses back where they froze & they came back even better than the first time. It's amazing how strong plants can be even when mother nature brings on unexpected weather. We pretty much went from winter to summer here with only about 2 weeks of spring. Spring is my favorite time of year. It's the only time I can go out and dig in the dirt without having to put on the cooling hat, vest and neck wear. I shouldn't complain though since I can still go outside even if it is cumbersome.

Good luck with your grapes!

Thanks! I should of started seedlings long time ago, but we are fortunate to have long growing season. We've just had our first 90 degree day yesterday and this morning, I got overheated just walking around the block at 10:30 AM and had to come in and rest.. Still inside. Time to put the ice packs into the freezer for sure. I love my MSAA cod vest. My biggest problem with the grapes is keeping the birds out of them. I've tried aluminum reflectors, didn't work, going to put screen cloth over them long before they get ripe!

We had to net nearly all of our berries and grapes or we wouldnโ€™t have had any. We got some heavy duty white netting that worked much better than the cheap plastic stuff, and we harvested tons of fruit. I wish you well!

CalfeeChick profile image

where did you get the netting?

Raintree Nursery out of Washington. You may find them online.

Where I was living before I had a cherry tree and had waited impatiently for the cherries to ripen. Out of the hundred or so cherries on that tree i ended up only getting 10. The darn birds ate the rest earlier that morning! Oh well those 10 the birds left me were sweet and juicy.

greaterexp in reply to Peruzzot

Weโ€™d always leaves few on the top of the tree after we removed the nets and let the birds enjoy those. But I canned the rest after making at least one fresh pie. Iโ€™ll miss those pies!

I hadn't thought about a net. I had some old data cd's tied hanging from the limbs. The birds would just checkout their reflections.

CalfeeChick profile image
CalfeeChickCommunityAmbassador in reply to Peruzzot

I tried that too and sparkly gift ribbons. kept away small birds but not the larger ones.

Peruzzot profile image
Peruzzot in reply to CalfeeChick

We had a lot of sparrows in the area. They're about a medium size bird and they were the main ones checking out their reflections. Thinking back on it I can laugh. I wasn't laughing when they ate most of my cherries.

starlight5 I was going to buy 2- 12' cedar boards, 4" X 4" Posts and make a 6' X 6' garden. You measure the distance with sticks and String. Make sure to dig deeper holes for the posts, I would suggest cutting the posts at least 24" or more and burying all but 12" to connect the boards to. You would need to use long nails or screws to connect the boards to the outside of the posts. Be sure to not build the garden wider than what you can reach to tend the garden. Before you attach boards to posts, lay gardeners or contractors weed control material so that the board holds down the fabric. You can also buy stakes to hold that fabric down. Not sure what you plan on planting, but there are great articles on Pinterest about what grows well together and what not to plant together. We went with a Prefabricated 4' X 4' foot garden. We discovered that there is gravel and hard pan dirt 4-6" below where we wanted to dig the post holes. (Darn it) I wanted a larger garden but will live with my 4'X4' garden. We bought the prefab at Ace Hardware and got 2 because you can stack them and make the garden at least 8" deep. I love to garden and will have flowers and veggies all over in containers no matter what!! Best to you. It's a shame that you have shorter growing season..

I miss our farm a little, so itโ€™s nice to see your tiny grapes emerging. I planted 7 tomatoes and spinach, kale, lettuce, and some summer squash in the raised beds my darling husband built for me. I just hope my hubby and son remember to keep them watered while Iโ€™m away. Itโ€™s such a joy to see those green things growing!

For eating, we have seedless reds, greens and old school red tokays with seeds. The tokays have the best flavor. I must have the proverbial green thumb, I have 3 sequoia I started from broken branches, a Carmel Pine I brought home from Carmel, CA as a seedling in a foam coffee cup. I also have a silk tree that I brought home as a 3" seedling from South Carolina in a Ziplock bag. 2 Palm trees that I dug up as seedlings along a road I used to ride my bike along. I took a bucket and shovel and brought them home. Same place, different years. They are about the same size now. Oh, I forgot the Nectarine tree I started from a seed. I also started a rose from a cutting this year. Next, I will try to grow roses from seeds I rescued from rose bushes before my neighbor tore them all out. I've had others but have probably forgotten to list them.

Right now i'm living in a small apartment and have a tiny balcony but have some large pots just now starting to sprout cherry tomatoes, peppers, and carrots. I've also got aloe vera, oregano, basil, thyme, sage, and rosemary growing. I tried growing lavender too, but so far nothing but dirt showing for that.

You are doing great for having a small space. It's amazing what you can do like that. I also started out like that and had climbing honeysuckle for a while. Peruzzot I love growing Aloe Vera for it's healing properties and it's beautiful blooms. I have two with Blooms just about ready to open.๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒผ

I'm hoping the pot with the carrots is large enough to have something bigger than baby carrots. But I'll eat those too. I love fresh picked veggies.

We have 3 large raised beds. Be sure and line the bottoms with chicken wire if you have any gophers in your area. They seem to love vegetable roots. Itโ€™s so great to go out and pick fresh veggies.

CalfeeChick profile image
CalfeeChickCommunityAmbassador in reply to Linda3579

Great suggestion. We haven't had gophers, but right here in town, I've had to protect tomatoes from birds and from a raccoon we had one year. One year, I heard a crutching sound outside my bedroom and shined my flashlight onto a med sized possum! He was eating my decorative succulents. We also have a few squirrels running along the power lines that visit once in a while, the cat keeps most little critters away. I sometimes put chicken wire around the garden just in case we ever get a possum or raccoon again.. Not sure what germs the carry so had to dump allot of veggies those years.

Linda3579 in reply to CalfeeChick

We canโ€™t seem to keep the raccoons and squirrels from eating our grapes. Maybe Iโ€™ll try the heavier cloth, that greaterexp was mentioning. We just used the cheap plastic stuff.
