My wife Sylvia has been misdiagnosed twice and was told she had the Flu, then it was anxiety, some time after that which was in late 2016 then in early 2017 the GP agreed that it was Cervical Myelopathy, she was referred for an MRI, this caused a big problem as she is very claustrophobic and suffers from panic attacks, the GP washed his hands of it so we changed surgeries, again it was confirmed that it was CM, referred to Queens medical center in Nottingham who again confirmed what was thought. Due to my wife's claustrophobia it was thought that to get round the normal MRI an open MRI would solve the problem but know the health authority would not pay for it to be done, so it was left to my wife have a general to put her out which could only be sanctioned by a consultant. The day before the appointment to see him we were informed that it had been cancelled. We are still waiting as that was on the 19 September 2018, this episode has been going on from the 4 August 2018. Now it would seem after many phone calls and another letter from our GP that none of the consultants and there are several that non one wants to get involved due to any one of them agreeing that she should have a general Anesthetic which i do understand is a major thing to be done but from were i am standing there is no other way to get my wife for an MRI. I am at my wits end with worry as i appreciate how dangerous this condition is. Sorry for the lengthy post.

Hi I hope my experience helps you find a solution. I live on the Wirral but in 2009 was sent o the Royal and Broadgreen hospital in Liverpool to see a rheumatologist for lupus type symptoms and frozen shoulders. The rheumatologist continued to treat me bu sent me to a colleague in orthopaedics for my excruciating shoulder pain. After many test and cortisone injections under guided ultra sound and a horrible needling called Barbotage, I had 2 subacromial decompressions on my shoulders. Months after each I was still in pain and had a numb wrist and completely numb thumb in each hand.

The orthopaedic surgeon ordered a CT scan of my neck and found evidence of problems with my discs in my neck.

Thankfully, he then sent me to sent a hand consultant who referred me on to a spine consultant.

The spine consultant, after looking at my CT scan ordered an MRI. I was honest and told him I was claustrophobic so they said they would book me in for a general to do it under anaesthetic. I got scared and bottled out. I told the consultant that I couldn’t go in an MRI scanner. So they kindly sent me for an open one at the Walton centre in Liverpool. They even let my long suffering husband in the room as long as he wore ear defenders because of the noise....and he even sat close enough to hold my hand throughout....it was amazing!

The result is I’m diagnosed with DDD with mild and moderate myelopathy and stenosis C4-C7. No surgery necessary at the moment, but if I ever have trouble with my balance or with bladder / bowel control I must be treated urgently.

I hope my story gives you confidence to ask for what you need... I was treated with the utmost kindness and respect. It’s your right to choose where you go.

Best wishes,

BB
