I'm confused about why my therapist is delving into the content of my thoughts.

I was sitting and got the random intrusive thought "Go smear soap all over your TV and yourself." It was a thought. It's my understanding that we aren't supposed to do anything with intrusive thoughts.

My therapist, who works with OCD, said "In the grand scheme of things, it wouldn't matter whether you smeared soap all over your TV or yourself."

I don't understand what they meant by that. I thought the whole point was to allow the random, weird, intrusive thought to be there without doing compulsions. I'm not sure what the purpose of digging into the content is. With OCD out of the picture, it'd still bother me, as Aaron, to smear soap everywhere. Actually leaving a lot of soap on a screen would damage it.

Basically why did my therapist say "In the grand scheme of things."? It's causing me a lot of distress and throwing me off in what I'm supposed to be doing & trying to do therapy wise.

I think she meant it wouldn’t do anything really? It is a little confusing. Next time you see her ask her why she said that and let her know it has been on your mind. Always let those intrusive thoughts pass and don’t give into them.

So I don't need to actually lather my TV in soap?

What he's saying is it's not the end of the world to soap up the TV etc ,it's a trivial thing ,not like something really harmful ,you know the difference between silly stuff and serious stuff I think that is all he was trying to say ,,,what the real issue is don't let the thought s upset you they are intrusive unwanted and repeative, don't ruminate, let they come accept that they are a thought and NOTHING more ,,,lose the fear and ignore it ,,,it takes a bit of practice but it will work and you will get your life back

My therapist will not clarify what they meant and I'm torn up over this. I just want to watch my TV as it is, not lather it in soap. I don't understand why they won't give me a one time clarification. I almost feel like I need to stop therapy.
