Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Hello. Has anyone tried this yet? It was recently FDA approved for OCD. If so, did it work? I am in the 40-60% of people who have not responded to SSRIs. (By the way, that range really bothers me! I mean, there is a huge difference between 40 and 60!!) I’m currently taking N-Acetylcystein in an attempt to regulate glutamate, but so far, it has not been effective. Any info on the TMS is appreciated!

I haven't personally tried it, but I'd like to. My brother is a severe addict and Bipolar I. He's over 160 days sober now and going strong for the first time in decades. One of the things he does every day is the TS, and he says it has helped more than anything. I see it, too, and I believe it does. He said it makes his mind calm. It's supposed to work well for anxiety, which makes me think it'd be good for OCD as well. In our family session his counselor invited me to try it with him, and I intend to. Please let us know when/if you try it!

I am happy that this has been approved. I plan to look into it and hopefully with a fuller life.

I thought I read that it's only available outside the United States and originated in Hong Kong.

If someone is already doing TS then I must have something wrong. The procedure I am referencing to has to do with lasers pointing at specific places in the Brain. They say that it does not involve breaking the skull such it is with Parkinson's at this time I believe. Does anybody know any more about this?

Hi Jewel, the device my bro uses, and what I wrote about is called Alpha-Stim. It's non-invasive. I'm seeing it referred to as "CES" on their website for cranial electrotherapy stimulation. I apologize if this isn't actual "TS", but I was thinking it'd fall under the category of transcranial stimulation. I don't know about any other devices or treatments, but I'll be keeping an eye on this thread!

The company is called Brainsway and they are out of Israel. Deep Transcranial magnetic stimulation. Check their website and you will find that there are offices all over the US. Alas, I’m from Kentucky and the closest office is in Nashville. I really want to do this! Good luck to you!

There are a few clinics that have it near me, including Dartmouth. Prior to FDA approval, my insurance would only cover it if I failed on multiple drugs from at least 2 different classes...I called them and explained the recent FDA approval (which they were unaware) and they said I could possibly get approval. I’m still trying to see if anyone has had any success with it, though.
