Hi Teresa, sorry to hear this. My dad had MSA and had put on lots of weight. His appetite has not decreased and is unable to move around very much so we thought it was more down to this. I am not sure whether weight gain is a feature of MSA though. Sorry I can't be more helpful. The MSA nurse should be able to help on this. Wishing you well.

Hello Teresa, Have you spoken to your MSA specialist nurse as I am sure they will advise - we are quite interested to know ourselves and so they might post here (Sam/Jill ??).

From our own experience however I would say it's so important to keep drinking sufficiently otherwise you may be prone to UTI's. The dietician has advised that the correct fluid intake is 30ml per Kg of weight per day which is quite a lot particularly if one isn't keen on drinking fluids. Jax would find this really difficult if she didn't have a PEG through which she takes most of her liquids.

Take care, Ian

Hi,

My wife has MSA and also struggles with weight maintainance. This we put down to inactivity and medication.

Talk to the MSA nurses and also NHS specialist dieticians about what's happening and how you feel and they will help and advise.

Thank you all for your help x

Hi teresa5, is this actual weight gain (have you weighed yourself) or is it just blotting. Constipation is a problem with MSA and it can be high up in the bowel, i.e it can be right at the beginning of the large bowel which leads to bowel bypass (mistaken for diarea) and subsequently leads to false weight gain and bloating. This is why a greater amout of nutrients can be gained from a lesser amout of food so you will servive on a lot less food for longer. High fibre diets or usually a no no as well with constipation in MSA.
