I worry I might have MPD. My platelets are high. WBC is elevated also neutrophils. Chest pain and burning sensation in my feet and arms I noticed for a couple of months. What are the typical signs and symptoms of essential Thrombocytosis? Do I have to undergo bone marrow biopsy?

Hi. My symptoms were very bad headaches and burning sensation in arm. Went through lots of different migraine tablets prescribed by GP before being diagnosed. Most important thing is to be diagnosed correctly. So get a second opinion if your GP is not giving you a referral to Haemotologist. Good luck!

I also get headaches once in a while. They refer me to a hematologist. I will be back for an ultrasound of the abdomen to see if my abdominal organs are swollen. I might have to undergo a bone marrow biopsy because the lab results are abnormal.

Hi Brianna. You do need to find out for sure. Many doctors know little about MPD's and you need to be referred to a Haemotologist. Don't worry about the bone marrow biopsy - it isn't that scary! You're normally sedated so you don't feel anything. Just a little bruising afterwards. Hope you don't need it and that your health improves with treatment. Good luck.

Hi Brianna, I just had a Bone Marrow biopsy to see if my ET had progressed to MF and I was scared to death. I felt nothing cause my Hematologist sent me to the hospital. When I got there the Nurse gave me 2 Ativan to help me relax. When they gave me the IV they told me that I wouldn't feel or remember anything and I didn't I was a little sore for a couple of days but truthfully I was worried for nothing. I will have another biopsy in 2 months and I am ok cause I know it won't be the hideous experience that I saw on UTube. Just be sure they intend to give you some type of IV Hope this helps you cause all of this MPV information can be pretty scary! The most important thing is to find a Hematologist who you can talk to who has patients with a MPV. Good Luck. Laura

dear Brianna, you really should speak to your GP about this and ask his/her advice as to whether or not you might have a MPD, a high platelet level could be due to other conditions, you can read all about ET and the other MPDs on our website mpdvoice.org.uk/.

Best wishes, Maz.
