symptom questions, kidney issues?

hi all you very knowledgeable people out there.

I was just wondering if anyone had any info on kidney problems for the MPN’s. I appear to be having right sided flank dull ache for the last couple of days that won’t go.

Can’t recall me doing anything strenuous that could have caused it, therefore just thought I would put it out there…if not I can tick it off the list as such

I am only on aspirin and fexofenadine for my itching at the minute

TIA everyone

I suggest you ask your GP about this. We all have our own experiences but we are not qualified to suggest a diagnosis of the cause of a pain. Good luck.

Otterfield has the right answer, you need Dr consult. One of the regular blood tests we get, complete metabolic panel, (CMP) is an area Dr looks to for any concerns here. Dr may also order a urine test.

I've had such kidney area aches on and off since Covid early 2020, it could get painful. I think my MPN has something to do with it too. Some of the meds we take increase risk for kidneys and liver. But so far my CMPs and urine have been ok.

I also occasionally do a home urine test when I feel something in kidney area, this is no substitute for Dr consult, and I rely on my Dr visits to be sure, but I think this test could show anything that's way out of normal.

Consistent pain is a warning that something is wrong. What you describe could be any of a number of things, including something to do with the kidneys. I would be sure to consult with a doc ASAP. Could be something minor and easily resolved provided you act promptly.

I would strongly suggest you go to your GP, I too had lower flank pain and it turned out to be kidney stones! They discovered I have a rare genetic kidney disease, so I’ve been under the care of a urologist and professor in nephrology, they have both assured me that there is no correlation between ET and kidney stone or disease and that I’m just unique and happen to have both (I inherited two faulty genes one each from my parents)! I’m telling you this just to reassure you that there isn’t a link. But that not everything is linked to our MPN’s we are prone to other illnesses so it’s always worth getting some advice. Please make a call with your GP if your not feeling it’s right. Hope your not in too much pain xx

Hello Grendel,I have had the same right side flank ache you describe and it comes on from time to time. It came on as a pain, rather than ache under my ribs on right side and travelled to my back. My GP sent me for ultrasound scan but the ache/ pain had gone by the time the scan appointment came. However, the findings were two small cysts on Left side of liver and a small cyst on Left kidney. This info was given to me by GP and Haematologist and that there was nothing to worry about. I enquired twice about the Right sided ache but got nowhere. I eventually managed to get a copy of the Scan report which does say “Prominence of collecting system in Right kidney” which appears to me what could be the cause! I haven’t had a further GP appointment since she said all was ok as she’s on holiday however she did mention referring me to a gastrologist as I also experience an ache along my pelvic area. To my mind it should be a Nephrologist. So hoping you find out what’s causing your ache very soon. I note you are not taking Hydroxycarbamide. I am on 500 mg daily and it does state that it can cause kidney problems. I have ET JAK 2 + and also take Clopidogerel. Sorry this is such a long post!! Regards Fran

Get down to the doctor's asap a year or so before my wife was diagnosed with MF she had this flank pain, and higher BP. The GP wasn't interested, it was probably her right kidney suffering from a blood clot, which basically destroyed it. By the time she ruptured her spleen the kidney had shrunken and became useless. She has one working kidney now, and that is now down in performance due to the drugs she's on.
