Cataract Operation / Lens Implant

Has anyone had a cataract operation, lens implant. I assume it’s ok to have this op while having an MPN, the eye surgeon didn’t know about MPNs. I have ET (MPL) and on Pegasys.

Yes I had both eyes done (separately) last year because of pressure problems and one eye was also developing a cataract that was going to need fixed sooner rather than later.

There was a post recently about this concerning whether it was necessary to stop blood thinners. The consensus was no as it's a non invasive operation but surgeon/anaesthetist should be told what drugs you are on. As usual best to tell haematologist you're having it done as well.

Although mine was done for pressure problems, to avert glaucoma, the outcome is I no longer need distance glasses just reading ones, which is very good!

Hi Raff. Had a cataract removed just 2 weeks ago. All good, I did ask the question on here re stopping meds, the answer came back no need. I am ET taking Hydrox plus aspirin , and other meds for other conditions...so I have no knowledge of Pegasus I’m afraid.

The only downside re cataract removal is when I look in the mirror....thought I was younger than that person looking back at me !!!!!!!

I had both my eyes done within a week. No problems....... just let the surgeon know... no change in medication

Hi Rachel, I have just had done laser treatment to put a hole in each eye due to the pressure being high in both eyes, the pressure could go on to cause me to get Glaucoma so needed to be done, all was successful, but have now been told that I will eventually need a cataract operation probably within the next year on both eyes, but this will not be a problem and hopefully will improve my sight, well it did for my husband.

I have ET and the Ophthalmic Doctor was fully aware about my MPN as he had my hospital file, and was very reassuring about the procedure.

The only down side is I will not be able to wear eye makeup 🤨 for a couple of weeks, the same as when I had the laser done, but once I was told all was good, it went back on. 😃

Thanks Jean, thank you for taking the time to reply. I had lots or reassuring messages. I think I’m just getting a bit scared as the op is tomorrow. I don’t think the make up thing is a problem for me as I’m a bloke ! Hope all goes well for the future. Raphael

I have ET and have had both eyes done to remove cataracts. No problem. I now only need reading glasses

I had cataract with lens implants. Had not problem. It’s nice not needing glasses. I have primary Myelofibrosis and take anagrelide for high platelets

Hope operation went smoothly. I found eyes back to normal within 24 hours with immediate improvement in vision. Had to wear dark glasses on first day outside as everything so bright initially but if weather as gloomy as we've got in Scotland you may not need to! Just ensure you keep to drops regime. Optician put a plain lens in my varifocals for first eye as I had a bit of a gap before 2nd eye done.

I had cataract surgery in both eyes in my 40s, believe it or not. The effect was immediate. I had one eye done at a time but it was painless and so great to be able to see again.
