This is really an article that should be read by anyone that has ever suffered from Mouth Ulcers caused from chemotherapy, and the kind that often evolve after taking HU...

This might well prove to be a new treatment for relief from HU non-melanoma skin cancers and mouth ulcers, that are generally very hard to treat in many people.

Apparently, HU causes many of those complications, and Ruxolitinib can further exacerbate those complications too...

There may be some general 'Conflicts of Interest' with this new Laser Light Therapy article, but I thought it was worth the read in any event...

I know there are others here too that have also suffered from mouth ulcers that seemingly will not heal properly. In my own case, I have a mouth ulcer that developed when taking HU that never completely healed, and it has now been quite sometime since the cessation of my taking HU, (c. 2.4 years).

HU article extract:

"The ulcers are caused by a reduction in cell viability that occurs when hydroxyurea disrupts the S phase (synthesis) of the cell cycle. Hydroxyurea inhibits the synthesis of DNA, which causes damage to basal keratinocytes and hinders the production of collagen. Inflammatory mediators that are derived from platelets and related to myeloproliferative disorders may play a role in causing the ulcers. Treatment involves stopping the hydroxyurea therapy and applying a moist wound dressing. The ulcers do not respond to conventional therapy alone and will not heal without cessation of hydroxyurea."

There are a couple of other articles referring to aiding the healing of HU Leg Ulcers:

PPS. I can provide a peer -reviewed academic article concerning the claims behind HU possibly causing non-melanoma skin cancers and mouth and leg ulcers, in some patients...

Thank you so much. Although at the moment I’m not suffering from mouth ulcers having this information makes decisions to stop or alter meds easier should the need arise

Very interesting, I do have a question though, and will also ask the haematologist tomorrow. As my wife has repeatedly had upper Gastrointestinal bleeds (having one now) which are apparently from her upper small intestine. They can't find bleeds in her eosophagus or stomach. Is it possible the hydroxy could cause ulcers in the small intestine? As she also has this dreadful blockage of the portal vein, which inturn causes portal hypertension giving probable varices in her small intestine. I imagine ulcers and varices do not mix too well. Her bisoprolol and amlodopine were recently replaced with carvedilol, since when she is on her third bleed. The gastroenterologist will not see her until end of August, will not reply to emails or calls. I had better stop here before I get too angry. ATB.

Hey there ATB... :-)

Really sorry to be hearing that your partner is suffering at the present, and I wish I was a medically trained person who might be able to assist you better w/ your question.

However, as I am not, I can really only suggest that you seek the correct advice from your MPN specialists, as they are definitely better qualified to speculate than myself...

Just one question however, was your wife ever taking Un-coated aspirin?

Reason for my question is simply that I also suffered from Portal Vein bleeds when I was taking said aspirin...

However, after switching to enteric-coated, I also stopped taking HU and started Interferon Alpha, (as this was before Pegasys Interferons became available etc). Shortly thereafter, I was reclassified as MF and put onto Ruxolitinib and my life almost returned to normal... bizzare really...

In any event, my bleeding soon ceased shortly afterwards...

Sorry that I could not be of more assistance...

And I hope you guys manage to have it all sorted really soon...

Best wishes :-)

Steven

Clever stuff! I treat mouth ulcers with an Urgo paint-on product (for Aphtes in France) and I find it works well, reluctant to give up Hydrea as it controls my PV quite well, is simple and cheap, but don't have leg ulcers, so fingers crossed...Bugger of a disease, so many extra problems, ruins your skin, gut..and heart, now have atrial fib so am on beta blocker, horrors! Like a zombie! Hope this improves when we get cooler weather.

Hi Socrates_8 - I took Hydroxuria from 2004 to 2011. I did not have mouth ulcers. It did bring my platelet count down into the normal range. My biggest complaint was that it clouded my thinking. During that period, I analyzed and designed business IT systems. The work was difficult because of the Hydroxuria but I didn't realize the extent of my thinking impairment until I stopped taking Hydroxuria.

Take care and I hope all works out for you....Bippers

Hey there Bippers... :-)

Yes, it really is quite a fascination... and so many variables that always need to be considered. I also suffered really badly w/ the mental fugue during my HU days... Really so glad to be free of all of that too...

HU just did not work well for me...

Best wishes :-)
