Ibuprofen patches?

I am on aspirin and Anagrelide, does anyone know if it would be ok to use an ibuprofen/anti-inflammatory patch on my very painful arthritic knees? I'm going to clinic on Wednesday but thought I might get a bit of relief with one before then. I do on rare occasions take a couple of ibuprofen, I've been prescribed co-codamol but hate the side effects, as if I don't have enough side effects with the Anagrelide and ET!!

Hi Lizzie, sorry to hear of your pain.

I suppose there is some increased risk combining it with aspirin. However, I would be inclined to think ibuprofen patches remain more localised with the minimal amount absorbed into the bloodstream - at least compared to taking oral ibuprofen. That of course is just my opinion.

I suffer joint aches from time to time. I’ll be honest, when it’s bad I do take ibuprofen. I’m aware of the risk, but it’s the only thing that works. I try and leave a good gap between taking aspirin and ibuprofen, don’t know if that makes a difference really though.

Maybe it’s something you can check with a pharmacist.

Hi Lizzie, I cannot take ibuprofen so when I had a total knee replacement some five years ago now they gave me tramadol OMG I was off with the pixies so all I could take was paracetamol, since then I have used on my other knee is flexique and over time the arthritis pain has disappeared also where my knee was bone on bone and I was due to have this knee done I do not need now as there is just a small amount of arthritis at the back now, so all I can say is this worked for me thank god as the op was rather painful, so did not want to go through it again. I also exercise every day this for me has helped immensely, am due to see specialist in September for a check up, so hoping that all is well. Be cautious with Ipuprofen can really aggravate the old tummy.

Hi Jean, I am having a bit of a giggle because Googled Flexique as I as intrigued, and wondered how edible cake covering and edible glue can help with pain, only to see that the capsules have the same name as the cake decorating stuff. Maz

I have ET and am on HU and blood thinners (clopidogrel and aspirin). I very occasionally take ibuprofen, and it's been fine. The last time I saw my doc I asked her about using Voltaren or other NSAID gels/creams for painful joints, and she said it would be fine. She said that it's so localized and contains a small percentage of the actual anti-inflammatory med, that it would be just fine. I would think that the patches would likely be the same thing. It wouldn't hurt to check it out though of course.

Thanks, I'm going to buy some and take them to clinic on Wednesday and see what they say. Like you say I think occasional use should be ok.

Hi Lizzie, ask your pharmacist to check for you about the patches, but take note that aspirin can interact with NSAIDS - Ibuprofen. Maz

Maybe ask your pharmacist? I think the localised argument is right but a pharmacist would confirm.

Per ePocrates avoid-use alternative due to increased bleeding risk.

Hi Lizzie, there are so many possibilities to deal with arthritis other than more chemicals. Please try to get find a good holistic dr. To help you with this. Our body have enough to deal with already. There’s Curcumin that works wonders with inflammation, curd patches directly in the knee, dietary help and some homeopathic stuff. Ibuprofen is very bad for your gut and brain. Long time use also leads to dementia as does Tylenol and co.
