Hi. Just a quickie. Has anyone with PV ever been prescribed metronidazole the antibiotic please? I've heard it can affect RBC. Thanks.

Hi I have ET, and have been given metronidazole a few times, bloods have been fine, you have to be taking it for quite some time for bloods to alter. After your course try eating some Kefir yogurt this help put back the good cultures in your gut that antibiotics take out.

Hi - Yes, I've had it several times (seems to be the anti-biotic of choice for my dentist, as I'm allergic to penicillin!) Can't say I've noticed any RBC problems, though I've only ever had it for 7 days at a time. :-)

Hi

I have had. 7 day course along with amoxicillin and my reading has shot up after being well controlled for 2 years. Another reading in 2 weeks.... hope it’s gone back. Shall try to avoid in future because it made me ill. Yes prescribed by dentist!

Thrombocytopenia and leukopenia are both listed as Serious Side Effects by ePocrates. Nothing there about impact on erythrocytes. I have been on metronidazole and similar antibiotics with ET/PV several times with nothing other than the same side effects everyone experiences (kill good bacteria in gut and higher risk for fungal infections). I would not seat it. It is unlikely you would be on it long enough for it to be an issue.

Forgot to note Serious Side Effects are not as frequent as Common Side Effects.
