Can folic acid cause a raise in platelets?

Hey guys,

Has anyone experienced or heard of a rise in platelets when taking folic acid/folate?

I have been reading that people with very low platelets are given folic acid to help them produce more platelets so this has left me wondering..

About a year ago my platelets jumped from 400s to 1200 in just a couple of months. The only thing I had changed in my lifestyle was that I started taking pregnancy multivitamins with folic acid.

I stopped taking the vitamins and worked on getting my platelets back down for the past year. They’ve been in the 600s for the past 6 months.

My GP wants me on folic acid again to prepare for a healthy pregnancy. I checked with my haemotologist and he said it’s no problem.

So I’ve been taking folic acid (on it’s own, not multi vitamin this time) for just over a month and my platelets have randomly jumped up from 600 to 800s.

Is this a coincidence do you think?

I don't know the answer but I've been taking folic acid while undergoing IVF treatment. My platelets have remained stable but I'm also on interferon. I was a little concerned so I'd be interested to know if anyone knows the answer! 😊

Please don’t be too concerned, it may be completely unrelated.

I think I’ll take a break from folic acid for a while and see if the platelets decrease at all.

I’ll also follow it up again with my specialists ☺️

Hi Daisy. I started taking folic acid when I was so exhausted and had other symptoms from venesections. I did a bit of research and had a blood test and I found I was low in folic acid, I have been taking 2 x 400iug a day, my platelets are a bit on the low side I think because of increased Hydroxy. only had one venesection a few months ago. I do need a blood test to see how its doing. Good luck with your future plans. Mal

Strange, we all respond so differently. One for the scientists I think.

I don’t think this is a coincidence. Please make sure that whatever vitamins you take, that they are natural vitamin. Best is from food!

Here is a website that has good info:

For me, liver is the best pregnancy food. Tons of folate and iron. I have an inborn anaemia. In Feb. I started eating 8oz. of organic (a MUST) liver weekly. For the first time in my life my red blood cells were in the normal range and my thrombos did not go up! If you don’t like liver, try to incorporate the other foods listed into your diet. What we get from foods is much easier for the body to take in and use for its processes. Multivitamins if not natural are almost useless. They flow through. Hope this helps.

Isn't there an issue with too much liver during pregnancy? Something to do with too much vitamon A and can lead to sight problems for fetus??

Hi Mcrg,

I’ve never heard about too much Vitamin A causing problem with the fetus. I eat 5-6oz (not 8oz) of liver per week. About 150g. Just a small piece.

My mom ate a piece of liver weekly when she was pregnant with me. My eyesight has incredible focus ability since my early childhood. 200% right eye, 150% left eye. Both of us never Supplemented any Vit A. I was an incredibly strong child and got straight As in school, till I got 19 amalgams put in with in 2 months, at age 15. that’s when all hell broke loose with my physical and mental health.

It’s always best to get Vit A levels checked, if there are dangers here. I wish you a wonderful pregnancy. A child is the greatest adventure in life! Take care. 🙂 Anag

Hi

My folate level goes from normal to low all the time, I'm on 2 months folic acid, then off for a couple of months then back on them again. My haematologist has decided that i should be on them now everyday no matter what my level is. He said it wouldnt do any harm to be in them.

Thanks for your reply J. So when you are on the folic acid for a couple of months your platelets don’t seem to react?

Hi, well,I have taken it for about a year but my platelets have gone down so for me I don't think it matters in that way.

U couldn't take folic acid at all as made me sick, so I just ate foods I could keep down that were high in folic acid, eg, green veggies and fortified breakfast cereals!
