Hi, I have PV and have had a knee replacement but not a hip yet but that day is coming soon. I always get bloods checked before my op, allowing enough time for a venesection if necessary. My Orthopaedic consultant got advice from my haematologist regarding my PV which was good.

I always have special boot-like things on in theatre which keep the blood circulating. After op, heparin jabs and three weeks of tablets once home as well as those lovely stockings!

All the best for your op. Kindest regards Aime x😺

Aime thank u so much for getting back to me as I know with pv it’s such a worry when u have surgery with blood clots thank u

No problem. The other thing I do after surgery once home, is have little journeys e.g. go downstairs for breakfast, then have a rest, make a cuppa, etc but don’t do too much. Your body will guide you and soon lets you know if you’ve done too much. I struggle a bit post op to get my hydration levels up again especially if you bedroom is upstairs and your loo is downstairs and speedy is not your name when you have a new joint!!😹😹

Hi Leapi, the best person to answer that is your haem, gp or surgeon. I would definitely get the flight socks, drink plenty of fluids and also make sure your bloods are okay prior to both flight and surgery. Kindest regards Aime xx

Thank you so much. So glad to hear your surgery went well. You need some spoiling now as well as gentle exercise. Have you got a hydrotherapy pool near you? If you had, it's brilliant once your wound had healed, to aid to a speedier recovery. Kindest regards Aime xx😺😼E hugs and flowers.xx

Yes - I had PV for 14 years and have now graduated to myelofibrosis.

My knee replacements went very well but of course needed blood transufusions.

My right hip was replaced in 2016. Unfortunately, i had an infection following from a hematoma. I may have to replace the left hip soon. I do not regret the surgery as I am walking so much better. I feel the orthopaedic surgeons need to consult with the hematologist in all these cases to take these blood disorders seriously.
