Positive Post for a Change.

Hi All,

I saw a post on here a long while ago about chelated magnesium and Vit B12 taken together can help with energy levels. I have been on them for a few months now and I do not have as many 'fatigue' spells as I did, so, whoever it was, I thank you!

I have also made a concerted effort to reduce the stone and a half in weight I had gained since starting Hydroxy last October. One stone down, half to go! Losing weight is easier in the summer I think. I'm eating strawberries like I used to consume biscuits, cake and the odd chocolate. What happens when strawberry season ends? Who knows but for now I am rather pleased with my wee self.

Hi Mica, let me be the first to congratulate you on your terrific weight loss and please push on to lose that annoying half pound. I myself have no problem losing weight , indeed my issue is keeping it on but it's been stable of late which I'm happy about. Like you say easier to lose it in this hot humid weather as it can supress ones appetite and lighter meals are on the menu.

I think it may have been a Forum member called Peter from the North East that mentioned the benefits of taking magnesium. I haven't tried it but I may well do as I suffer fatigue.

Anyway keep up your good work then you can be really rather pleased with your 'wee self'.

Well done, yes I find it easier to lose weight in the summer too, lots of lovely fruit, plus I'm not very hungry when it's very hot. I find my energy levels go up when I lose weight especially, and also if I eat more healthily😁 I find these days that sugar makes me really sleepy but also makes my heart race, hard to resist all the time though when you're a chocoholic and love cake, I try to keep it to a minimum though 😂

Thanks for your reply Wentry, I am not denying myself the odd bit of chocolate but instead of eating a whole bar at a time, I find one or two squares is enough. I just stopped buying cakes and my weakness, cheese scones! It makes sense that losing weight increases energy levels, less to carry around.

Yes we try to ration it but occasionally give in to more if we have some and have had a bad day😉 Like you I find it best to not keep the temptation in the house 😂 Yes scones, of any sort, are best eaten freshly made and still warm, yum 😁

Very pleased to read your good news! Any gain in energy with this is a great reason to celebrate and it is most interesting to hear that B12 plus magnesium are making a difference for you. Are you still battling with head aches, or have they started to behave themselves too??

Congrats on the weight loss. I'm in the winter season here, unfortunately, so have just consumed some rice and tinned kippers for lunch. Since increasing the Hydroxy dosage I have noticed an increasing resemblance to a Blimp when I catch sight of myself in the mirror, and the scales are revealing new numbers that I hadn't seen before... I look forward to the strawberry season starting here! :-)

I am midway through a novel by Alexander McCall Smith, "The Unbearable Lightness of Scones" which I am enjoying greatly. He has a fine way with words, and a delightful mix of humour and insight, and it is lovely to read more about Scotland.

Haha! you made me laugh Peter and I love the title of your book! I am working my way through all of Chris Carter's books, my daughter's favourite author, great writer but I worry about daughter's psyche! Haha!

I so love a cheese scone but gave up making them myself or I would pig out on them before they went stale, or I'd get around that by toasting them.

I went to my GP about my headaches, he asked the usual barrage of questions and thought it was not linked to my meds or my ET but due to stress and sleeplessness. I was putting rather a lot of pressure on myself to try to get this house and garden ready to put on the market. He prescribed a very mild dose of Amitriptyline and I have taken the pressure off by leaving the house until Spring and I am sleeping soundly and the headaches have gone completely. I think it is so easy to associate every symptom to our meds or our condition.

I know I will wail at the demise of the famous Scottish strawberries when they go out of season, no others compare.

Hi Grace,

For the last few years, whenever I have visited our local library, I have selected books to read purely on the design of the cover, and if the title amused me, rather than who the author is! Rather a superficial method, I know... but judging the book by its cover has brought me some real gems. The "The Unbearable Lightness of Scones" has a great title, a lovely cover illustration, and the edition we have at the library is hard back, which really ticks a bonus box for me in my selection process!

I don't think I have read Chris Carter as yet, but will have a look and see what I can find.

Toasting stale scones is a great thing to do. When we still had a microwave (which I had invested in for the rather odd purpose of force drying some pottery floor tiles that I was making for a client one rather cold and damp winter!!), we did sometimes microwave stale scones after first giving them a light sprinkle of water. These were quite nice in their way, but did have a rather odd rubbery texture, rather reminiscent of fried squid!

Very pleased that you have had some relief at last from the headaches. It is so difficult to unpick the cause of these things when we have rather odd blood, nasty medication and so on floating around in the system, but good that you and the GP have sorted it out. Sensible of you to shift the sale of the house to Spring and give yourself more time.

Enjoy those famous Scottish strawberries! :-)

What is the book about? It sounds quite intriguing 😉 The scones we had at yours were very nice, I can't remember, did you make them or did Laura, I know you made the lovely soup 😁

Hi Wendy,

I was trying hard to think of how to describe the book. It is a wee bit like a very, very high quality TV drama that takes place over many episodes and involves the lives of a number of people that live nearby. It definitely isn't Coronation Street (!!), but the concept of a street with characters that you get to know and love (or loath), gives a hint of what goes on in the book! The characters are wonderful, and range from a rather conservative portrait painter (who has trained his dog to pee on the iron railings of a contemporary art gallery!!), to a 6 year old boy who has a baby brother that bares an uncanny resemblance to his mother's psychotherapist! There is quiet humour running through the story, and a lovely gentle insight into human nature that is most appealing.

Scones are definitely Laura's territory. She makes lovely scones! The (rather solid!) soup was my own. Never quite sure if the "soup" I make is really soup at all, as it is a bit more substantial than the watery stuff, but it does the job! :-)

Hi Peter,

I definitely prefer soup with plenty of body rather than the watery sort, I always put extras in 😁 I make scones too but not too often otherwise I'd have to eat them all 😂The book sounds really good and just my sort of book, I'll try and download it to my Kindle for when I go on holiday, not sure I'll have time to read it before then, I'm so busy with work this was terrible timing with my knee 😏

Hi Peter,

I went on Amazon and found out the book is part of a series about 44 Scotland Street, the one you're reading I think is Book 5 so I thought I'd start with Book 1 first 😄 I've bought it for my Kindle but not downloades yet as it's busy charging 😉

I'll let you know how it goes when I get time to read it ha ha, my work keeps multiplying, my customer is adding items to the list to be looked at by the minute, even though they said yesterday they wanted things looked at by Friday if possible 😂 Hmm they need to stop adding more!

Well done getting book 1 of 44 Scotland Street series, I'll see if I can get it from our library as it would be nice to start at the beginning although book 5 is still very enjoyable on its own!

Hope you are able to keep up the energy levels for dealing with so much work! People often have no idea how impossible their demands are. I once had someone ask me to make an earthenware tajine for them to use in a photo shoot for a recipe book.... They asked on a Thursday afternoon and wanted it by "next Monday"!!! I did manage to extend the deadline by a week and made them quite a nice tajine, but it is never a good idea to do a pottery commission in a week and a half.... almost impossible to get the thing dry and fired in that time!!!

Thrilled for you. It’s just occurred to me that maybe because I started taking magnesium ( was already taking b13) that my heamoglobin climbed quickly during a 2 month period. If my next blood test in 8 days time shows another hg rise, I will indeed think that magnesium has helped.Thank you,

Thank you so much Wyebird, even if the last half a stone doesn't go I won't worry too much because I actually have a waistline of sorts back! Maintaining it will maybe be a bit of a struggle as the days shorten, the warm turns to cold but I'll worry about that another time.

Interesting to see if the magnesium does that for you, I think it's the combination of them both that has best results. Let us know if results are still good.

Well done on the weight loss, it isn't easy - as the saying goes I wish it was as easy to lose weight as it is to lose my keys, specs etc! I am also finding it easier with the hot weather we have been having, and I too have been having strawberries! I will look into the magnesium and B12 as I have been anaemic and been on iron tablets, prescribed by the haem, for a few months.

Hi Lizzie, I took them for an increase in energy and do not know the ins and outs re your iron deficiency but I'm sure if you have a look around on here or google you will find what it's good for.

Hi Sand-Dancer, yes it was hard at first but the strawberries became my 'grazing' of choice because they were so good and Just noticed that suddenly my clothes were just that bit looser, so it spurred me on.

I believe the magnesium has to be chelated to allow the benefits to stay in your system longer and for the B12 to be more efficient. I don't think you can get a combined pill. I was recommended 'Dr's Best' and they are both easily acquired online.

Haha! I know my willpower is not always so good. Every time I open a certain cupboard there is a packet of caramel chocolate digestives taunting me. One day they will be ripped open, I just know it!

Thank you AnnaGarcia. Still feeling good here, still have about 5 lbs to lose but if it doesn't go I won't be too unhappy. Getting harder now the weather has gotten very cold, almost like someone turned the thermostat down overnight and the craving for comfort food returns. Almost soup making season again here in Scotland, better clean out the pressure cooker that has been unused over the lovely summer we have enjoyed. I shall try to 'cock a snook' at the unhealthy comfort foods and give myself one day a week when I allow myself to indulge a little. Well, that's the plan anyway, always good to have a plan! xxx

Oh Eleanor, not even 6 hours has gone by and my plan is not going to plan! Just raked up 17 bags of leaves out of the back garden, had to stop, I'm whacked. Made myself a cup of tea and just pigged out on M & S mini flapjacks. The idea was I'd give myself some more energy to continue with the raking...not going to happen. If it doesn't get done in the morning then it usually doesn't get done. Maybe have 40 winks!
