Well that was a surprise - hydration

Had cardiac review a week past Friday, and as I had haematology the following Wednesday asked for the blood test for that be done at same time. Cardiac review required a fasting blood test. Got result, HCT of 0.46 so booked a venesection an hour before my haematologist appointment. In the meantime, saw a surgeon about gallbladder removal on the Tuesday. He also took blood tests. On Wednesday, nurse about to do venesection looking perplexed and asked me why I was having one done. Turns out GB surgeon took a FBC test and HCT now just 0.43. Just shows how important hydration is.

Hope everyone well, and those in UK enjoying this lovely weather.

Yes, it all makes sense.

Hi Liz,

Thanks so much for sharing because these details are so important. I really believe I am doing well with PV (only aspirin and occasional venesection) as I drink lots of water and eat

a healthy diet of mainly vegetables. I have witnessed my counts go down by themselves without a venesection, several times and to the surprise of my specialist. I use Curcumin and turmeric (there has some scientific evidence this works). Low inflammation is the key.

Hi Boss1, yes I was surprised and pleased at that result. Not had a venesection since January, so all good. Must admit my diet isn't as good as it should be, but I like and eat a lot of veggies. Keep meaning to try curcumin and turmeric.

Hi Liz,

I am on Hydrea 500 x1. (Been on for two months )I was given a motion sick ness patch as well as I take the new Dramamine which is all ginger, for nausea. I went back for my weekly labs and found that I would have to have hydration IV for I was dehydrated even though I drink almost a liter of water along with a huge bottle of CORE water.. I also have to take some iron or I have no energy..but iron causes the PV to make more..catch 22. But I agree..keeping hydrated during all of this makes one feel better! What type of veggies do you find more helpful?

Hi Sheryljean, yes you do need to be careful about taking iron supplements. Dark green, leafy vegetables contain a high iron content, but I eat a variety of them, lots of tomatoes and peppers in my diet. I'm not that clued up on nutrition, but there are some on here who have done lots of research on very healthy diets. They might be able to point you in the right direction. Pop a separate post on, so that folk can see it and give advice.
