Mouth Sores from Pegasys

Any suggestions for treating mouth sores? I have been taking Pegasys since November, and recently started getting mouth sores. It seems to occur weekly, and lasts for about 3 days, then resolves on its own. Thank you for any advice on how to manage the days when it flares up.

Hi Clevemic, Have you managed to control your mouth sores/ ulcers?

Hi, I’ve got ET and on hydroxicarbomide. I’ve been told by my peridental consultant and dental hygienist that prolonged use of corsodyl is detrimental as the bacteria become immune. A new product called blue M is very good. I used the mouthwash and had immediate relief. It actually promotes its use for cancer patients. It comes in various forms.

You can buy it on line but the price varies. I think Swallow is the cheapest site.

you could try using a salt and water solution, just a small amount of salt (about 1/2 teaspoon) in about half a glass of water, mix it well, and then use as a mouthwash. Maz

I found bongela and mouthwash helped. I did end up having to have a mouth ulcer removed (not a pleasant experience) I’m on Pegasys.

I had some mouth ulcers in my early days on Pegasys, normally a couple of days after injecting but found Corsodyl mouthwash helped get rid of them.

I don’t get them any longer, so hopefully it will just be a passing side effect for you too.

Your team should tell you, about the mouth hygiene used by the clients attending for chemo.

Change your tooth brushes every three months.

Store them upright and there is an ultra violet light you can buy that nooks them. It came with my electric tooth brush.

Keep your hand hygiene to a strict routine.

Use a baby tooth brush on the days that your mouth is problematic...

Hope this helps.

I developed a persistent sore mouth while on Pegasys 90mcg (am now on 45mcg and injecting only every 3 weeks) and it turned out to be a common auto-immune condition - oral lichen planus. I now attend an oral medicine clinic and they prescribe a steroid mouthwash that works wonders, whenever it flares up. In this clinic they treat others on interferon that developed the same mouth condition. Worth checking with your dentist if the soreness persists. X

We use to have our patients rinse their mouths regularly with normal saline (salt) or sodium bicarbonate solution and if their mouths were really sore they “swished and spit” a “Magic mouthwash“ solution made from lidocaine, Benadryl and maalox (1:1:1).

Peridex rinses also help.

(I am a retired oncology nurse) Good luck!
