Receding gums

Hey everyone! This may be a strange question but has anyone with an MPN (I have PV) had or have an issue with receding gums, now I know the usual suspects and it can be age related but I went from having great bill of dental health earlier this year to suddenly having one side of my mouth with receding gums. I am off to see a hygienist in a couple of weeks (earliest appointment) but a friend who is a dental nurse didn't think my teeth were particularly bad so then I start thinking age related, ok so I am 44 next year but seeing as PV is deemed to be an "older persons" disease then maybe just maybe my body inside is older than 43... oh and I have had bladder cancer and that is deemed more prevalent in men over 50 (ps I am a woman and always have been lol).... so just looking for any stories from you guys, the true experts :) Thank you as always. xxx

Louise love, I've had receding gums for a while, it's our age (boooooooo). I know, outrageous! You'll always be younger than me honey and you are utterly fabulous with it! :-)

Is it our age though because no one else apart from a friend who is in her 60's and my Mum in her 70's have it... plus it has almost happened overnight - I knew I had some sensitivity - my dentist gave me a clean bill of health after not going for years, did xrays the lot and said see you in 12 months... now one side I can see at least 4 if not more teeth have receding gums as in the gums are yellow and super sensitive.. anyway bought floss, bought mouthwash and booked hygienist.. fingers crossed as not quite ready to lose teeth yet :) thanks about the fabulous! xx

Sorry to hear this, I guess I always thought dentures for me but when I was in my 70's not my 40's or 50's... but going to remain positive.

I am much older than you Surrey girl, but had a shock last week to be told by my dentist that she could not replace a filling of a back tooth,as after X Ray's it appears I have lost bone density...a lot ...and there are problems with several teeth beneath what I thought were OK and nice and white too!!!So I suppose the long time of taking Hydrea is beginning to tell....I am meant to have a bone scan (rest of me) ! Think I will give it a miss, one nightmare is enough,Hope you manage to have the gum problem sorted.Best Wishes.

Oh dear sorry to hear this. The weird thing is I went to the dentist for the first time in years as I am quite distrusting of them and the cost of them and they gave me a clean bill of health and didn't want to see me for 12 months... so hence this sudden receding issue is a shock I discovered one day! Maybe have the bone scan to see what you are dealing with as maybe then you can seek alternatives to help or would you rather not know. I think knowledge is power and then it's up to us to create a positive mindset (not always easy I know but we can but try) Best wishes to you too.

Hi there, I have ET, take hydroxycarbamide. My gums get sore, are receding and I believe my teeth are weakening. The Haematologist says it's nothing to do with the drugs, but I don't believe her, because she says that about everything. If I believed her about how insignificant hydroxycarbamide is, I would be feeding it to small children as sweets 😉

I love your reply and weirdly just come off the phone with a friend talking about the medical professions stance on things. I just checked some iron supplements I was given in case I needed them although it was decided to hold off and saw there is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in them - I don't even put that toxic chemical on my body let alone in it!

I read that receding gums can be linked to medications!

I will see what the hygienist says about mine but it is almost like it appeared overnight and I can see the gums going a clearish yellow if that makes sense and if they recede to that point it almost looks like my teeth would pretty much fall out!

I'm 66 , diagnosed with PV 18 months ago and been on hydroxy about 16 months. I too had a shock at the dentist's this summer -he said one side had significant receding gums and he would need to see me in 3 months to see if he needed to take action.

The fact that it was so sudden, I didn't think it was just age related. Anyhow, I did buy a Waterpik, so my teeth are now superclean and when I went back to the dentist a couple of weeks ago, he said they were much improved. My PV and hydroxy haven't changed, so maybe its the cleaning, or maybe the massage it gives.
