Excessive Thirst.

Hello all,

I am finding myself drinking between 7-10 pints of liquid a day, mainly water with a small drop of cordial. To add to this I take a pint to bed and often need to get up and refill in the night. I've always drank more since I've been taking Hydroxy as I was told too, now I do it as I feel thirsty constantly and have never drank this amount before. I been checked for for diabetes which was negative. Anyone else have this problem. I have ET and am on Hydroxy 1.5g mon-fri 2g sat sun, I also take 1 aspirin daily. I am 45 years old, fairly fit, not overweight, I have had ET for 6 years. Thanks Justin.

It is possible. I just read an article about it.

Odd. You don't eat a lot of salt in some way do you? What about leaving out the cordial and seeing what happens? Still at least u r taking lots of fluid, which many of us find a bit of a challenge!

I've never heard of this side effect of ET. I know we are told to drink at least 3 litres of fluid a day which is just over 5 pints. What does your Haematologist say?

Hi

I have ET and i am also on Hydrea and aspirin. In the beginning I force myself to drink a lot, but now I need to drink constantly, I always have a water bottle with me. Maybe it's because of the medication and because out body is now used to all the water ?

Hi Justin - I have ET been on HU ten years - it does certainly require extra drinking and lots of water is good - your amount does sound quite high I must admit so I would check it out with your consultant - I am assuming you are new on the treatment? I know when initially taking HU the effects can be stronger and in due course as the body adjusts it balances out more - I know when I started the fatigue from HU was overwhelming I could sleep sleep sleep and no one could wake me (after a lifetime of being more of an insomniac !!) but that soon eased out once my body got used to the meds - hopefully that will be so for you too - it's good too to drink sips of water as you go thro the day maybe a little water bottle with you all the time - rather than big glassfuls each time - it's the aim to keep nicely hydrated and pre-empt real thirst with a little and often - that may help balance out things for you. Your consultant will keep adjusting your dose too til the right balance is found. All the best.
