Gastrointestinal Issues from MPN

Have any of you had gastrointestinal issues associated with your ET or PV?  I am referring to colon bleeding.  Bright red bleed associated with pain in lower abdomen.  Not a heavy bleeding that requires hospitalization.  I have had maybe 5 episodes of it.

Hello,

I have suffered with this condition and I think that it could be caused by the Hydrea irritation the lower bowel.i got it checked out in hospital and they diagnosed colitis in the lower bowel.

I had a similar problem after I started taking hydroxy. I had a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with diverticulosis. You really should see your GP. Best wishes, Karen.

Hi

I have had past bleeding issues because my enlarged spleen has caused varices in my stomach.

In fairness i never noticed it, and also had no pain.

You need to get it looked at as continued bleeding will lead to anaemia.

All the best

Paul

I have had this problem too.  Not very much bleeding but severe, chronic diarrhoea.  After a colonoscopy I was diagnosed with diverticulosis and given medication to take if necessary.  It has settled down now and I don't take the medication all the time, only when I am away from accessible toilets.

I haven't had any bleeding but have developed what I would broadly call 'digestion problems'. I was diagnosed with ET at age 69 and prescribed HU and asprin. The asprin was 'dispersible' (which I gather is cheaper) and I did not understand that it would have been better, in the long term, if I had had 'gastro-resistant'. After 3 years I began to have pains in my stomach almost immediately I had taken the asprin. The haem recommended 'gastro-resistant' and the pains disappeared but I now have to be careful what I eat, how much and when.

I was interested to see that a number of us link stomach problems to HU. I had assumed mine was all down to the asprin .( In fact, mine may be.).But, I really wanted to warn people - particularly the 16 year old just diagnosed - to be cleverer than I was and ask for the 'gastro-resistant' version.
