Peg interferon versus interferon alpha. I've read that interferon alpha can have an effect on the thyroid.

Is there any medical evidence that peg interferon is a better alternative if this is shown to be a side effect of interferon alpha? Has anyone else had the experience of changing types of interferon?

If your thyroid gets knocked out from using any version of interferon it is easily supplemented with Synthroid. Do some research on polyethelene glycol the chemical that coats the interferon molecule to have it stay in the body. I use Intron-a since 1995 for PV.

Hi Florence1961, I've had some advice from Prof Harrison for you regarding your question and she has said that there has never been a study comparing different types of interferon in MPN. All interferons can unmask and indeed cause thyroid disease. This is usually routinely monitored for patients on this therapy.

I hope this helps, but if you have any concerns regarding any medication always discuss them with your haematologist. Kind regards, Maz.

Hi florence1961 ive used both interferons and fingers crossed so far have never had any thyroid problems. From a personal perspective ive found peg interferon better for me because the side effects ie flu type symptoms, aching headaches etc are pretty much non existent but when I was on interferon alpha it made me feel pretty awful all the time. Sorry I cant help you with the thyroid question. Feel free to msg me if you want any more info on the differences ive experienced in more detail. Jen x
