ROBERT COWAN - NATURAL TREATMENTS.

FROM THE CURRENT MIGRAINE SUMMIT. CONTINUES TODAY

migraineworldsummit.com

I thought these notes from his talk were interesting for people to see. He talked about non-medical treatments, a really interesting chat for those of us who don't want to swallow tablets all the time.

BIO FEEDBACKG

Good data to support this.

ACUPUNCTURE

This is good with an Eastern doctor, not a western one who has recently learned this practice. He does think that thousand of years of this practice has success.

DAITH

Sceptical. No hard evidence of this and the fad seems to have wained a bit.

LIFESTYLE

No greater benefit than making sure you have a healthy and regular lifestyle as those that do are the ones that do the best.

FL TINTED GLASSES

If you wear these a lot you become MORE light sensitive than less, as proven by data.

FOOD ALLERGY TEST

Data is weak and not the time or money for this.

DAIRY

Each to their own on this one.

GLUTEN FREE

Faddish.

KENOGENIC DIET

Data is mixed and not recommended.

5:2 DIET

No evidence. Migraneurs DO NOT do well with irregular diet patterns.

VEGAN

Maybe beneficial to your health but sees it as another fad.

GINGER / SAFFRON

Good to invest in.

HYDRATION

Hugely important.

EPSOM SALTS BATH

Some find it good (no studies on this though).

CHIROPRACTOR

He is personally wary of them.

PROBIOTICS

Good evidence for general health, but no data evidence for migraines.

BON TRIAGE

A very good track condition app.

SUPPLEMENTS

Does rate Vit B2, Magnesium, CO Q10 and calcium.

MINDFULNESS / MEDITATION

Finds this a good thing to do. There a well controlled studies to support this.

OVERALL DIET

Says to find a diet you are comfortable with and be consistent with it. Should eat on schedule with not being a grazer. This gives the best benefits.

Interesting, my neurologist says the only data regarding diet and migraine that is worth paying attention to is around gluten free on the basis that there is a lot of data on reduction of migraine in patients with Coeliac Disease who then give up gluten.

The neurologist team say the data on magnesium is very old and not conclusive. Bio feed back is completely unfunded and doesn't seem to be available in the UK at all which is a shame. My neurologist there was no compelling data on the tinted glasses.

I had an eastern accupuncturist for a while she said with my type of chronic migraine I would need accupuncture everyday unless i was prepared to do hours of meditation a day.

I've done the 5:2 diet for the last 3 years and it makes no difference to my migraines, I've had to chart my migraines for the last 10 years for various doctors so I should be able to see a clear pattern if it did.

Thank you for taking the time to write it up for us!

I always hear great stuff about magnesium and did nothing for me. Oh that's a shame about what your medical professionals have told you as it totally contradicts some of what this doc says. Perhaps we have to take advice with a pinch of salt and try it ourselves?! It's a shame as conflicting advice is not helpful for anyone with a health issue.

Yeah there is a lot of conflicting advice particularly between the UK and the USA I find. I've seen a lot of neurologists over the years, abroad and in the UK, and I haven't been very impressed the majority of them except for my latest neurologist who's opinion I really respect. She specializes in migraine and has been the only person who has really helped. As far as my own experience has taught me the only things that cause my migraines are sleep, stress and hormones. Botox has been the only thing that has helped, magnesium should only help if you are deficient in it so I presume you could test for that but I haven't had a look myself.
