Pressure and burning at back of head

I have had headaches and migraines for 30+ years and am just starting Topamax. However, I am just wondering if anyone else has an intense burning sensation at the back of the head especially with exertion?. Also, a feeling of pressure at the back of the head. I get this even when I have no headache or migraine.

Out of interest have you had your thyroid adequately tested, beyond the only test the NHS do, ie the TSH, as if only this was done, you will more than likely be told you are fine, when I test my thyroid, (so glad I did as I too failed the TSH test), I do all of these, privately: TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies,Thyroglobulin Antibodies, Ferritin ,Folate, Vitamin B12 (NOT ACTIVE B12), C Reactive Protein, Vitamin D (25 OH), REVERSE T3, Insulin, HbA1c, Magnesium.

My doctor does regularly test D, B12 and Iron to make sure they are not low. Also if there any history of thyroid, autoimmune diseases or heart attacks or strokes at an early age in your family, with members past or present, or multiple miscarriages etc. Too often Hughes Syndrome/APS, otherwise known as Antiphospholipid Syndrome is missed, especially by neurologists!

This condition causes migraines and headaches that often do not respond to standard headache medication, also causes Chronic fatigue, and a host of neurological symptoms. Come back tome if any of this rings a bell. MaryF

Thanks Mary for your reply. I am on the Thyroid forum & self medicate with NDT. I have also been tested for Hughes Syndrome. Think I will have some private tests done again.

I should do your Hughes Syndrome/APS tests again, there are three they need to do all 3 of them. Come back if you need more information. or the tests listed. MaryF

Thanks MaryF. I will look into paying to do these myself as not sure if they were all done.

These are the 3 tests and some private testing companies do them but really your GP should do them, if you get positive to any of them, please be aware that Lupus Anticoagulant is not Lupus, just an old fashioned name for the test:

Thyroid UK is the best site for information for Thyroid issues, and Sticky Blood-Hughes Syndrome Support is the best one on here for Hughes Syndrome/APS. These listed here are the 3 blood tests your GP could do for you. londonlupuscentre.co.uk/hug...

Pressure in the back of my he head, for me, means tension headache, which can be deadly. Acupuncture treatments helped that for me about 30 years ago. I saw a doctor once a week for a year, and then twice a month for another year to have results. Now I have Classic migraine every day if I do not take triptans. Once a month or so I get a killer crippling ice pick migraine for two days. I am despairingly desperate, depressed and live in fear for the return of the pain and isolation, and consider euthanasia, but am not getting the tension headache any more. Blessings to you to be pain free.

Thanks for your reply Margauxjean. Sorry to hear of your pain. It is a nightmare. Good to here that you found some relief with Acupuncture.

Occipital neuralgia Was the cause of my burning in the back of my head. I recently had radio frequency ablation done on the nerve that was burning.

Yes I get burning and tingling in the back of my head mainly in one place. I had a head injury years ago and I put it down to that for a long time but now I'm not sure. It got worse about 11 years ago and spread to my entire head, currently it's back to the original area.

It’s horrible. I have no idea what causes it.

I think quite likely occipital neuralgia as someone says above.

I’ve been reading up on it & it does sound likely

For me it goes on and on and then seems to trigger a full on migraine.
