Another direction?

I've had migraines since I was a teen. But have taken propranolol for 3 years which has worked well at preventing them until now. I've had 4 migraines since October, and currently one that's lasted 9 days!! May not sound like a lot compared to some but it's debilitating!

Painkillers don't work, I'm allergic to triptans. My gp has suggested that I'm depressed and low and that's why I'm getting headaches. In fact I've never been happier, I'm in a very good place!!! I've tried 2 antidepressants in the past with horrendous side effects, I'm not willing to try another!

But since blood tests and a brain scan have come back ok, what other route can I take??

If I were in your shoes I would request to see a Migraine Specialist. These professional only treat people with migraines. Migraines are a symptom of something else going on ( neck and back pain, anatomically something, allergies, etc).

For me once I am past 24 hours with head pain I am making an appt. For an injection with my doctor in clinic. If it is the weekend it is 8am Monday.

If I do not act as soon as I feel the tinge of pain it will progress to get out of hand. When I am in a full blown migraine there is little I can take at home to help. When I am in the Emergency Room they give me a cocktail of medication. Anti-Nausa, Anti-Inflammatory, Migraine medication and fluid. I can not take that at home. There are a few things I could take but not at the level a hospital can give me.

I have to say... dose and timing are things that I did not consider before and I have found they are so important.

After over 15 years of searching what has worked for me is...

Magnesium glycinate (3x a day 400mg PER DOSE), Feverfew ( 2x daily, 100mg)

When the first signal of pain hits, cold pepsi ( drink fast and can only) and 2 OTC migraine pills, if I still feel any pain, 1 pill of Imitrix( 100mg- most people only use 50mg) , wait 20-30min. I try to be in. Dark quiet place. Then use ice on my neck and head. If that doesn't work I use an injejection of Imittix. 95% of the time this takes it away within 10min. If I still feel anything I schedule a doctor appt. For an injection ( knock on wood- I have not needed this in a few years). Or head to the Emergency Room with assistance because I am really in no space to drive or make medication decisions on my own.

In addition.. I drink a lot of water every single day. I never.. ever skip a meal and include protein in every meal. When I have not eaten a large enough meal I can get a migraine. If I eat the migraine usually goes away. I also use hot peppermint tea and peppermint roll on oil ( especially when in a place with smelly thing ot sitting next to people with strong odors).

If.you get a chance please listen to the Heads Up Podcast, they are 2 female Migtaine Specialist and they have really helped me a lot.

Hope this helps..

Let me know if you have any questions

Good luck in finding the magic that helps you.

Hi Adora. I'm sorry to read that your medication is not working that well anymore. There are other types of medications out there, not just anti-depressants. That said, you may need to check from the hormonal side of things and see if it could come from there. All the best!
