Hi, Ive just discovered this community. I have had depression for many years but was only diagnosed about 18months ago.

I am trying different strategies to overcome my feelings of despair, worthlessnes, negativity, lack of motivation the list goes on. These strategies include exercise - I play golf (hence the nick name) and I go to the gym. I like 'me' time where I listen to music and read social network sites such as this. Going for a walk helps whether it is alone or with a friend or Wife.

Does anyone have any other good strategies to cope with depression?

Hi

Good to meet you and welcome. Sorry to here you have been having depression but sounds like you are doing the right things like exercise that can be a great help. Look into doing a mindfulness course that can be a big help.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. When I was diagnosed with depression my GP referred me to an NHS counsellor who then put me on a CBT course which I found very helpful. It changed the way I think about situations.

I still struggle with talking to people who dont understand depression. There seems to be some misunderstandings that mental health is taboo or a sign of weakness - especially in men. Do you or anybody feel the same?

Well done for going to your GP and for taking the first steps. I agree there is a stigma surrounding mental health and not just in depression and anxiety but all different mental health issues. However, the more and more people who open up and talk about it then the more people will learn about it. So again well done for opening up and sharing!

Hi

I used to be extremely embarrased about admitting I suffered from depression, I didnt want pity from people. I am now in a position where I am able to talk freey about it and without shame and since then I have found since I have opened up the real me people are far more understanding of me.

I love the exercise that you used to help with yours, I also do the same. Great feeling

Glad my comments were help. We should not be ashamed of who we are. Easier said than done. Keep working on it.
