Hello has anyone prescribed Amitriptyline antidepressant for sleep?

Am just having trouble switching off my brain from past 4 months. Getting very less sleep 1 or two hrs.

Gp prescribed Amitriptyline 10mg leaflet gives you a long list of possible effects. Currently no sleeping remedies are helping. Took Valerian root 800mg last night but no help?

Don't feel no anxious or low mood feel tired, zero angry during the day but when in bed eyes get closed due to tiredness , mind stays awake.

Any advise will do allot.

I was on it for nearly 14 years alongside chlorpromazine, but I was on a much higher dose than you’re on. You’ll do nothing but sleep, and to be honest I was kinda sleeping my life away.

It’s an MAOI not an SSRI so you need to be really careful with it. It has a metric butt tonne of interactions that can result in a nasty case of liver failure and death

:) thanks for taking your time replying , the end line didnt help though :) still its fine.

I have taken this medication now for twenty years, the dose you are taking is the lowest you can take, yes it is an old AD and in my case I still take it for the side effect it has to control nerve damage in joints etc, I was taking about 80 mg although now my medications have been reduce here to about 20mg as I am following a different course of medications on reduced rate because of age.

For my physical conditions I am having injections of B12 and D3 tablets to repair my joints and tendons. and if it works that is fantastic. Sleeping medications can be problematic by getting hooked on then. this drug will be easier to withdraw from. Because of the lower dose. The medication generally is used for positive side effects. unrelated to Anxiety. There are better medications out there for depression and anxiety, that are cleaner to use

thanks BOB, i think i will stick with 5htp a supplement to help me sleep. as mentioned below its a cocoon state of health anxiety . The more you think the more gets in to you and at the end no sleep.

My boyfriend used to take them, it makes you sleep. I would get into running. I find running helpful when i am stressed and unhappy

thanks, I have tried not to take them and gone with 5htp supplement . When you read stuff about your symptoms your mind goes in to a cocoon state and my cacoon brakes when a health professional does random checks and tells me you are all good. However even though i go for walks or keep telling my self am fine but NO mind has mind of its own. Its a weird thing and in my 34 year old life i never experience such thing. or may i have and never realised or researched.

You are completely right, i agree with you.

My mind decides how i feel despite me wanting to be in control. I can only control my depression for a good 5 days after that it takes over and everything goes grey sad and empty.

same here Monday to Friday everything is fine Friday it all starts and lasts till Monday and all my A& E visits and 111 calls are on Sundays. them 3 days i go sleepless with tired eyes wanted to rest but mind not sleeping at all. i speck to Samaritans or 111 to get in to sleep. Now its frustrating , Few things i have realised is not to check your symptoms online along keep yourself happy.

I wish i could take you for a walk in nature- it always help me.

And indeed you are right internet sometimes has too much information that destroys us, takes that element of mystery away.

Stay strong and safe

I’m on it for nerve pain but 10 is the lowest dose and literally does nothing! You need to be taking around 40 to feel any effects, and over 60 for antidepressants. They start you off on 10 and slowly work your way up. I got wild dreams on 10 bed didn’t make me sleepy or help with a good nights sleep.

Am on herbal root 5htp from Holland and barret is kind of working for me. Keeping my racing thoughts at by and bringing some sort of sleep.

This idea might help, when you lie down, on youtube there is yoga nidra, or breathing exercises, or play a bedtime story also on youtube, and try not to worry about how much sleep you get. Maybe after a couple of nights this will help.
