Counselling can make you happier with yourself, control the thoughts in your head that make you feel bad about yourself, allow you to control things better... it’s not so much a cure as a better way of being yourself.

It does not happen right away, so you have to allow yourself some time with it. Eventually it is supposed to help you identify better ways to cope with your feelings.

But I have heard it changes people completely

Only in the ways you want to. They don't have magic powers, and it doesn't happen overnight. Medicine can help with depression, and sometimes quickly, but changing the way you think takes practice. Something that changes you too is just knowing you can talk to someone, and that the things that are bothering you are important to someone other than just you! That's always my greatest relief - I'm not alone with these thoughts.

CBT can help you relate to your life and expectations. They can help you approach you life in different ways, also they give you tools to help you move on through difficult times and come to terms with problems you suffer from caused by others

We all need to move on through life and it cannot be expected, we will never change our life choices several times throughout our time on this earth.

One concern many people have, they feel they are a Scapegoat for others problems, we need to toughen up and sometimes you will learn to stand up for your needs and expectations. All above cannot be a bad thing remember everyone with depression etc needs to change in many different ways, this change cannot be a bad thing, we all need to possibly toughen up and live our lives in a more positive way

Medicine will help get you to a place where you can start to change your thinking.

Oh man, definitely. I'm unrecognizable from who I was, in terms of the bad traits I learned growing up. And the good things I was as a kid now have time to flourish: I draw more, I'm an emotional support for my daughter, etc.

Of course, people do it without medicine, too! I did a whole lot of positive work before I stripped all the gunk away and realized that at the base of it, I had bipolar disorder. And then I started taking medicine. But some people go with medicine first, depending on their situation.

Sometimes while being on medicine you can make a lot of progress in therapy correcting negative thinking. And then you can try without medicines again - or not. Whatever works!

You need to motivate yourself and yes that can be difficult, look on problems in a different light. You need to gain confidence and understand your needs, motivation will come about when you feel positive in your own actions
