How did you find out you have depression? It's usually from a doctor and they are the ones you need to see for counselling. I presume you are in the UK? Waiting lists can be long though so if you can pay for it then it could be worth it. Google therapists online is your best bet. Good luck. x

Hi jessie,

I'm sorry you have depression but glad you came here! I have depression, too, but it's under control, so I'm not depressed and haven't been for a long time. People here are good to talk to and very supportive, so you can ask questions you may have and get decent answers. I wish you well and hope you're feeling okay.

Hi Jess,

Firstly, if you have self diagnosed your depression then please don't do that. you might not have depression and self diagnosing it can add a lot of unwanted stress, convincing you that you have depression. Go to your GP/doctor and tell them. if they feel you have then they will run you through a number of questions. on completion that will tell them if you have depression or not and if you do then how bad is it. Please do that.

If you have gone to your GP and they have said you have depression then 2 options are open for therapy. you can go private which will cost money and the sessions usually are about an hour long and work once a weekly or every 2 weeks. availability can depend on how busy they are but you can get an appointment usual within 2 weeks. The initial sessions are about the therapist knowing about you and your situation. they need to make an assessment in order to better help you and you need to be very open and honest so no need to feel embarrassed and its all confidential. you can get a list from counselling-directory.org.uk/

if you prefer, you can wait for a counsellor from the NHS but there normally is a waiting list. I waited for one and it took at least 3 months. After about 3 sessions I didn't feel they were helpful and she told me i might not have depression so i opted for private.

As well as this, you have samaritans or you can come here and tell us and we will try out best to help you and guide you in the direction so you get the right help you need.

Speak to your gp and ask them to be referred for counselling... its amazing how many of us go to see our doctors and are prescribed anti depressants but never offered talking therapy.

If you can afford it there are private counsellors available
