Ultrasound Accuracy?

Hello,

Back in 2018 I discovered a lump on my left testicle. I made an appointment and went to the doctors as soon as I could. The doctor ordered a ultrasound and the results were it was a cyst. However, I got a second opinion from another doctor and he agreed that a cyst had formed on my testicle. Fast forward to day 2021. The dullness, pain, discomfort has gotten more frequent and the size of the lump has grown. I’m going back in again to have it checked and another ultrasound done.

Question: how accurate are ultrasounds. Could it has missed the fact that it was indeed cancer? Would the lump have grown slowly in three years if it wasn’t cancer or does cancer grow slowly in the scrotum?

It sounds as if you may need to have it removed. Hoping your next consultation goes well.

I would strongly advise you to get it checked again, emphasise that it has grown, causes you pain, and you are concerned about it.

The accuracy of ultrasound tests depends as much on the skill of the operator in interpreting what they see on the screen, as it does on the machine itself. Cysts supposedly have a distictive appearance on ultrasound examination, but can be misinterpreted.

Several years ago my wife had a breast lump which on ultrasound examination was thought to be something benign, but it was tested, just to be sure, and was found to be cancer. Fortunately it was removed, and she remains clear of cancer. Moral:- ACT, don't wait, insist on testing, get a second opinion if necessary, go where the evidence leads, and live a happy life!

Thanks for the advice. Back in 2018 I did get a second doctor’s opinion of the results of the ultrasound. Both doctors agreed it was in fact a cyst. However, for piece of mind I’m going in on Tuesday to be looked at again with another ultrasound.

Glad your wife is doing great! Cheers 🍻
