4 months after circumcision - scar hypertrophy

I'm new here but appreciated all the advice on this forum in my recovery period post-op.

I was circumcised 4 months ago for chronic foreskin irritation. Post-op was generally ok. In the last month there has been increasing swelling/skin formation along the left side of the scar line (see photo). The right side has healed well. The urologist said this was post-op hypertrophy and not uncommon. But I'm worried about the loss of the groove between the scar and the head. And I'm worried it won't go away or settle down, as it seems to be getting worse.

Does anyone have any experience of this, or any advice about what to do? I'm really not keen on another operation. Thanks

I don't think your scar is hypertrophic at all. Your scar is deeper between the shaft skin and former inner skin. The scar line looks quite smooth to me. It looks more like swelling to me. Have you wanked a lot without lube by stretching the shaft skin? Was your inner foreskin remnant symmetrical right after circumcision?

Have you spread moisturizer to scar already?

I have used a strip of silicone scar sheet since week 5 post-op.

Thank you. I agree it doesn't look hypertrophic or keloid. I was very careful not to masturbate for 4 weeks post-op but have been doing so since, and yes, often without lube. I'm regretting it now.

Yes, the inner foreskin remnant was basically symmetrical.

Do you think the swelling will go down over time or is this an irreversible change? Would moisturiser or bio-oil help?

Yes, I think the swelling will go away, but you need to change your wanking habit. Use some lube, if you have a tight circumcision with very low movement on shaft skin. Before the cut there was not much stretching, cause the shaft and layers of foreskin moved a lot. Lube/natural (coconut) oil/baby oil/albolene is way to go now.

Scar area is like damaged skin now without good ability to moisturize that area well. It likes to get moisturized. Any fragrance free oil or emollient cream help the skin recovery. It may take 2-24 months post-op. I think Bio-Oil is just a hype thing. There is no scientific evidence about better healing with it.

You can ask opinion of other doc, if you like.

Nice to read this. Here I am reading the benefits of bio oil and I was wondering if it works. What kind of strip of silicona are you using? I am using a silicone stick and rosehill oil (I do know still if it helps)

Bio-Oil is as good as other mineral oils. You just need to spread it at least twice a day regularly. Silicone scar sheet may hold the moisture balance better than any oil or moisturizer cause it won't get wiped away.

I bought two sheets of 'Silicone scar sheet' (12 cm x 8 cm) from Amazon and cut them both to three strips. I did use one reusable strip around one month until it got too sticky and need to be changed to new one. After seven months post-op I have flatten scar line without hypertrophy. But I can not say either is it cause of using silicone strip and moisturizer or will I ever get hypertrophy.

Hi velo28 you defo have swelling based on your pic but it will go down in time we all heal different when you wank or have sex / massage coconut oil is the best stuff on the market but you must still take you don't want to damage Willy you only get 1 when you are done you need to put AQUEOUS cream on you bits and it's cheap and works a treat it's fragrance free I do that 3/ 4 times a day hope this helps good luck and take care

I am still in the process of recovering from the scar. But I have improved a lot from how I was before. I had your same problem even worse. But I was solving it with a cream called Contractubex. You can see my posts and see the change I've had

Glad to hear you have had an improvement. I'll have a look into that cream. Did you do anything else to help recovery? Like avoid sexual activity? I just don't want to make things any worse

I have not had any discomfort. Before, when I had sex, I used to inflame the scar. But currently it no longer happens

Pudiste hacer algo para mejorar? No creo que hubiese sido cicatriz sino algún tipo de edema. Cómo estás ahora?
