Wow! I’m circumcised now!

Appt was this morning at the office of Dr. David Cornell - The Circumcision Center in Atlanta, GA. Aside from the generous consultation time he gave me the total procedure time took about 1hr 15min and included the prepping, figuring out exact inner and outer incision points to allow for the result I wanted, and some chit chat. A numbing injection was applied at the base of penis, which did burn for a few seconds before subsiding and then I felt nothing. After that, Dr Cornell got forceps and clamped them at two different points on my retracted foreskin to “mock up” potential incision sites he felt would accomplish the result and scar placement I wanted. He would pull the forceps together to give a me good idea of how it would look and I was able to see it flaccid and how it would look erect.

I told him I wanted to keep most, if not all of my inner foreskin so we went with a point just above the band of tissue where inner and outer foreskin meet. I also asked for a moderately tight skin-fit with some movement upon erection. He marked these points around the penis with a surgical marker and tapered it to match the angle of the glans and it came together on the ventral (back) side in a nice looking V shape I requested. The scar line would be located a little over 2 centimeters from the coronal ridge. He then got started.

I sat up and watched the entire thing! He said it’s been a while since a patient watched everything.

The doctor was fantastic explaining everything to me as he went along. He has a very gentle and methodical technique and mentioned how important it is to take great care in handling all the tissues to minimize trauma. I have quite a number of veins on my penis and there was some cauterizing that had to be done to stop bleeding though he said it wasn’t an excessive amount of bleeding.

He said, referring to my penis anatomy, I have a lot of skin movement in general and that quite a bit of outer foreskin was removed. On most men, that amount of removed skin would result in a pretty tight circumcision, but on me it’s moderate tightness. Based on the mock ups we did and how it looked when he was done suturing, there shouldn’t be any rollover of skin on the glans when my penis is flaccid and hanging at normal length, but when I’m cold and it shrinks, it may bunch. That’s cool. I don’t care much about that.

Suturing was accomplished with 8 stitches total. He said these are very light weight cosmetic grade sutures that are 10% the weight of regular ones used by most urologists. He explained his technique is to approximate and line up the edges of skin with a goal of symmetry and bring them together closely with just enough stitches to do that. He took care to make sure he was precise in his placement of the sutures very close to edges of the skin. I asked about night time erections and if 8 stitches are enough to keep the skin from pulling apart; he said No, they are not. The strength does not come from the stitches in his technique. After suturing he applied maybe 9 or 10 of these skinny but long adhesive wound closure papers overlapping the seam- all around.. Then he wrapped my penis with a pressure bandage pretty tightly to keep the gauze on and inflammatory response & fluid build up to a minimum. The bandage is very durable and will stay on for 10 days. The bandage is what keeps everything in place and secure and protects the open wound from debris and rubbing on clothing etc.

When the bandage comes off he said it will be helpful to keep penis aimed up toward abdomen if I am able to. He said at that point, the skin edges should be closed together and recommended the application of any kind of natural oil or something as simple and cheap as Vaseline to apply to the scar to keep it from getting irritated. He didn’t seem to agree that bio-oil is as miracle a product as some people think. It’s just a mixture of different oils and vitamin E. He said you just need something to keep it from drying out while healing & even without any oil or product, the body will do just fine healing on its own.

I was told when I remove the bandage ‪in 10 days‬, not to be alarmed to see what looks like a dark blood blister under the skin at the frenulum area since I have lots of veins and vessels there and right now blood is somewhat leaking out while the natural coagulation process is underway. It will go away.

After I was wrapped up and all the post care instructions were discussed, I headed to pharmacy to fill my painkiller prescription. The nerve block injections were beginning to wear off at this point and I felt a bit of a burning sensation. It wasn’t unbearable. I took the Vicodin at pharmacy and by the time I got back to my hotel I felt no discomfort at all and none for the rest of the day. I was able to go out and run some errands. The bandage on my penis is pretty discreet so no one in public knows anything.

One great tip he gave me for preventing Nocturnal erections is to take 1 or 2 30mg Sudafed tablets in the evening before bed. Sudafed is a nasal decongestant with a temporary side effect of constricting the erectile tissues in the penis. If you were to go to the hospital with a prolonged/dangerous erection, they would give medicine that has same ingredients.

That’s my experience from today. I’ll do another update if anything important comes up (hopefully nothing will!) and certainly when I remove the bandage on November 10th I’ll post.

Cheers guys. I’m so glad I finally had this done and felt like I was in excellent hands with Dr Cornell. Highly recommend him if you are willing & able to make the trip.

Many congratulations on getting circumcised. I’m glad that the operation went well and I hope recovery is easy for you. My sons and I love being circumcised and I hope you do too.

Hi Man, that's great you finally have it done and you will really enjoy being circumcised. that is a great post you have very detailed and will help other guys I enjoyed reading it. Dr Connell seems a very professional and courteous Guy you were right to go to him. All the best in your recovery and do keep us posted.

Congrats mate, you actually talked what I experienced after my first circumcision. Proud to be circumcised guy now, for 1 and half year.

I was interested to hear you had eight stitches. I only had nine myself and the healing was excellent. The surgeon said that current thinking was that leaving the wound more ‘open’ was beneficial and helped with drainage etc. In my case the bandage was only on for 48 hours with no issues regarding erections or pulling on stitches despite being done ‘tight’.

Happy healing.

Glad to hear that! I had several erections in the middle of the night last night and they were not painful. I just felt pressure. The tightness of the bandage seemed to prevent the head and area around circ incision from increasing in size. Sitting down and peeing as soon as I woke up helped make them go away.

Yeah, that’s the trick.

Tip for peeing: building up a bit of pressure before letting go should help with avoiding a wayward stream or spray until you get used to it

Yes, found that to be helpful! Overall I’m very impressed at how painless and normal everything feels. I have not needed any of the prescription narcotics pain pills prescribed this morning and I’ve not taken anything over-the-counter either. I can’t see the incision area now, but the rest of my shaft and head poking out from bandage looks pretty normal. There is some bruising at the base where the numbing injections were made.

Nigel5975. You mention how painless and normal everything feels after your adult circumcision, dispelling the myth that pro-circumcision advocates often use to scare parents into circumcising their newborn, i.e., that circumcision in an adult is so awful that parents should do it before the child will remember the experience. Sounds like you had a good experience, without excessive pain, and your doctor accommodated your preferences in circumcision style. Good for you! I am happy for you. I wish all males would be able to make the choice for themselves. Circumcision should be a man’s choice, not a parent’s choice.

Growing up I always wished I had been circumcised at birth, my dad and brothers are all circumcised but I was a premature born baby and that is why it wasn’t performed at the hospital. My mother says they never returned to have it done at one year because I was a very difficult baby and they didn’t want the added stress of a circumcision to make their lives more difficult in caring for me. With that being said, I am glad I got to make the choice of who my doctor was and pick the outcome.

gavelmaster in reply to Nigel5975

Nigel5975. Likewise, I’m glad that as an adult you got to make the choice of who your doctor was and pick the outcome. An adult circumcision is much more precise and the results much more predictable than infant circumcision. An infant circumcision is very much hit or miss as the doctor or mohel can only guess at how much foreskin to amputate and how things will grow 15 years later. Consequently, some men are happy with the result when they grow up (or ambivalent about it) and some men are not at all happy with it. I know men who were in your shoes, with older brothers and friends all circumcised, and feeling left out and “different” as they grew up and even well into adulthood. It is sad that we live in a society in the USA that used to shame a boy for being intact as nature made him. That is becoming less and less true in the USA as circumcision rates of newborn males is falling as it already has in the rest of the industrialized world. In the rest of the world, with the exception of Jewish and Muslim countries, circumcision rates are below 10%. In the USA, circumcision rates of newborn males is down to around 55% nationwide. So neither circumcised nor intact boys in the USA should feel out of place or “different” from the norm.

Again a similar experience with mine. I had a general anaesthetic and the only discomfort I experienced was having the candela put in the back of my hand, which was on a par with having a routine blood test. Didn’t have any discomfort from the wound itself and apart from an occasional prickle from stitches that became a bit spikey a few days later, I didn’t feel a thing. Kept it upright and didn’t have any swelling either. Couldn’t have wished for better, hope yours recovers as well.

I will. There is some bruising I can now see on the back of the glans. One of my testicles was sore yesterday and has resolved this morning. Not much else to report since I can’t take the bandage off for another 7 days.

Congratulaions on your decision. The intactavists here aren't going to be very happy about your circumcision!

gavelmaster in reply to Circedandlovingit

Circedandlovingit. The “intactivists” here have no issue whatsoever with a man choosing circumcision for himself WITH fully informed consent, which appears to be true for Nigel5975. In fact, the post by Nigel5975 handily points out why intactivists believe circumcision should be a man’s choice, not a parent’s choice. He was able to consult with his surgeon and specify precisely how his own circumcision should be carried out to his own liking. This is a far cry from the rather random and arbitrary way routine infant circumcisions are done in the USA to babies who cannot provide consent or instructions to the doctor or mohel who is performing the surgery. Case in point for letting the individual decide for himself. His body, his choice.

This is why the biblical circumcision is the correct circumcision. You are only supposed to remove the outer layer of foreskin. The flesh of foreskin is the outer layer. What they remove in routine infant circumcision is far to much. You can always have more removed later.

At1012 profile image
At1012 in reply to Circedandlovingit

I agree, especially when his circumcision comes out perfect. Notice that his circumcision only removes the outer layer. This is very close to the biblical circumcision. Do you know if they could do a circumcision, which keeps the ridge band, but just removes the outer layer of foreskin?

Google cosmetic circumcision, Dr Eid. He offers what you describe.

At1012 profile image
At1012 in reply to jimfromcalif

I looked at it, but it just appears that this type of circumcision would put tension on the testicles. Also the incision is being made where the nerves of the penis are. I think that this could cause problems. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. My idea was to retract the foreskin and just remove the outer layer of foreskin and some shaft skin while keeping the inner tip and mucocutaneous junction. Do you think this will work?

jimfromcalif profile image
jimfromcalif in reply to At1012

All circumcisions cut through nerves. The type offered by Dr Eid preserves most og the 20,000 lost through conventional circumcisions.

Nigel5975 profile image
Nigel5975 in reply to jimfromcalif

I did consider that doctor and his method but looking at his pictures on his website, I recall not seeing outcome images with even circular incisions at the base and an even and smooth result is very important to me since mine is well...not medically required. In some of the pictures he has, it does appear to pull the scrotum forward onto the shaft. If I didn’t have a tight phimotic ring, I may have considered this method a little more if I could ensure a smooth result.

jimfromcalif profile image
jimfromcalif in reply to Nigel5975

The idea behind the style is to hide the scar. Pubic hair covers everything. it has no effect upon the position of the scrotum. The first example shows specific surgery to remove the turkey neck webbing.

Wow, this made me feel so much better that there are doctors that actually understand the anatomy of the penis. What an amazing doctor. That’s so nice that he explained everything. I am excited to see your penis all healed up. That was smart to keep as much inner skin as possible. Did you keep the mucocutaneous junction as well? What about the ridge band? This is the tissue that is located just inside the tip of the foreskin. Just removing the outer layer without disturbing the inner layer is the kind of circumcision I was curious about because this is the biblical circumcision. BTW your uncircumcised penis is still very nice. I’m just so happy that you took us through the process :)

Nigel5975 profile image
Nigel5975 in reply to At1012

My doctor suggested choosing an inner foreskin incision point just in front (lower/toward the head) of the ridged band because my ring of tissue there was tighter than the rest of the foreskin and there would be a visible squeezing effect that could give a very slight hourglass or coke bottle effect/look or bunching up when I became erect. I wanted to avoid that but hey, my opinion is that there is no one-size-fits-all circumcision, so do what you think looks best on you with the guidance of your doctor.

Congratulations for making one of the best decisions you can make.

Congratulations 🎉 it look amazing. And by the way you were very brave to watch. From what I see, you will probably have a speedy recovery. Enjoy your new penis.

Take care.

Then maybe you should go on to something else. Should adult males also be informed about the possible gains from getting circumcised too? Many men do feel a big improvement after being circumcised, and say how much better the sex is. Seems like you want the doctors to tell the men how bad circumcision is, and talk them out of it. Fortunately there is a lot of information online that is very favorable toward adult male circumcision.

misterhyde profile image
misterhyde in reply to Circedandlovingit

You'll never be able to reason with someone like that who is so against anyone getting circumcised.

gavelmaster profile image
gavelmaster in reply to misterhyde

misterhyde. You are mischaracterizing the position of Intactivists, who believe circumcision should be a man’s choice, not a parent’s choice. Many intact men derive great pleasure from their foreskin. There can be legitimate medical reasons for amputation of a foreskin, on a man or a woman, the same as for any other body part. The key is informed consent......risks, benefits, function and purpose of the body part to be amputated, and the value of that body part to its owner. Cutting off a big toe will eliminate the risk of ever getting an ingrown toenail or infection on that toe. People can live full lives without ever missing their toe much. They can function just fine without it. Strangely, some people prefer to have their big toe.

gavelmaster profile image
gavelmaster in reply to Circedandlovingit

Circedandlovingit. People in the USA see and hear plenty of propaganda every day advocating for circumcision. Because it is a lucrative service they provide, most doctors nurses and hospitals only tell of the POSSIBLE benefits of circumcision without going into the long-term harms, and they rarely talk about the function and purpose of the intact foreskin and the pleasure and joy many men get from having their foreskin intact. Most of the men who look into getting circumcised are doing so because they have a physical, perhaps painful, problem with their foreskin. So, of course, if circumcision relieves their medical problem or pain then they are going to “feel a big improvement after being circumcised, and say how much better the sex is” just like you said. However, the fact is that the vast majority of intact men will NEVER experience medical problems and pain and have known nothing but pleasure from their intact foreskin. Two-thirds of the men in the world are intact. And two-thirds of those who were cut were done because of Muslim or Jewish religious ritual, not for medical reasons at all. Intact men are not easily scared and coerced into giving up their foreskin, but that doesn’t stop proponents of circumcision from trying, especially those who make loads of money from performing the surgery.

Did you discuss using surgical adhesive instead of sutures? Any mention of suture tracks? Examples in his website show pretty smooth results.

Nigel5975 profile image
Nigel5975 in reply to jimfromcalif

Dr Cornell says he has used both surgical glue and sutures and he prefers to use sutures as he feels that it’s sometimes possible for the surgical glue to migrate into the deeper layers of tissue and cause some issues that I’m not familiar with.. He says the tightness of suture is what causes track marks. If a doctor ties the suture really tight, it deprives the edges of the tissue of blood flow and that in turn causes discoloration of track marks. He has examples on his website of performing revision surgery to correct track marks. This patient had a great revision result.

Ha well I might qualify as an intactivist as far as you’re concerned, since I’m against RIC. But I’m an informed consenting adult who desperately wants to get circumcised bc it’s my dick so I don’t think I’ll be swayed by strangers lol

It's about the intactivists here attracting adult male circumcision.

What about removing the outer layer and some shaft skin while keeping the frenulum and ridge band intact and the mucocutaneous junction intact?

I like the aesthetics of simple streamlined meatshaft with the exposed penis head hanging off the end with a brown ring scar. Just the tube and the tip. And I want the ability to say “I’m circumcised” bc I wasn’t able to for a long time. I’m not saying it’s for everyone and ethically I would never push for someone with a healthy penis to cut off any part of it unless they wanted to. But it’s what I want for myself and if done properly it should look great

Im so happy for you, you've joined maddox's crew.
