anyone affected adversely by listening to music which evokes memories of the past good or bad. I find I am becoming very sad listening to music I used to enjoy?

Hi Canada,

Welcome to my world. I have been adversely affected by meningitis as well. I lost my hearing and so am using cochlea implant devices. Listening to music is a punishment to me right 'now. I used to enjoy music pre meningitis, but now they sound so weird and horribly annoying to me. Even the songs I used to know pre meningitis, I could hardly recognize when playing now. It's horrible. I doubt if things would improve over time.

Hi,

I just wanted to send you a message after reading this....How long have you had your implant? I had pneumococcal meningitis 16 years ago that left me profoundly deaf, and had my coclear implant fitted 3 months later. At first, i was like you, I couldn't make sense of music at all, which upset me greatly as I used to love music. Fast forward to now, and I can listen to all the music I used to listen to when I was hearing....my brain kind of plays the music in my head - its hard to explain, but please don't give up hope, and keep making yourself listen to stuff you liked before the implant. The only thing I struggle with is any music I didn't hear as a hearing person - it just sounds like one big horrid noise. But I try not to dwell on that, and just enjoy listening to all the oldies!

Hope thos gives you some hope....

Hi jbeany,

I've had my implant for the past nine months. Although you could say that it's too early to judge. I hope to come to your stage one day. Thank you for your message of hope. I will keep using them until they get use to sounds

so sorry, Vasco, I think you have enough to contend with I am sorry you have implants too. I think our irritation level is also weirdly affected dont you? I used to be such a patient person and now well, am just not! Its a big shame when you used to enjoy music so much and its such a great part of our lives, but maybe things change, I hope so for you too. Certainly find Talking Heads not so fantastic, but not too bad with Mozart... only one tune though, then I have had enough already. Just out of interest does speech sound different too with the implants or just music? Thanks for replying to me.

Thank you Canada, yes my mood swings make it so hard for me. Just like you, my irritation is out of control. I hardly have patient these days. Noisy environment irritates me so much as well as music especially jazz ...oh no! Don't even dare come near me with that one! .peoples voices irritate me as well especially high pitch voices. But I guess I've got to put up with it. I still have high hopes that it will settle with time. Never say never ...

Hi Canada

Music is probably the only thing I feel understands my moods since Meningitis, From feeling down to time of contentment I have a song choice.

At the moment I am listening to Sky radio 70'S radio but yesterday I was buried in Linkin Parks "Given Up" and various Avenged Sevenfolds songs.

I have many relaxation CDs which is easily out done by my rock collection but I do also have loads of 70's, 80's classics plus a range from blues to country.

Music does help as a therapy and I believe it has a strong part to play in the healing of the mind and soul when things are not right with the world.

Hope this makes sense

all the best

Pat

thanks for your advice and interest Pat, I am very happy to hear you are enjoying music and hopefully without tears too! I have still attempted the odd rock concert but have to wear substantial ear-plugs (but not about to give up all together) makes me appreciate just "how loud" it all was before! I shall persevere with little sound bites of music and find something may new that doesnt give me memories of another life eh? I thinkyou are quite right about healing the mind and soul its just finding the right thing.
