Research released earlier this week shows that a staggering 68% of mums and dads are unaware of the limitations of current vaccinations against meningitis.
Although great strides have been made to protect children from some types of meningitis, there is currently no vaccine to protect against meningococcal serogroup B (MenB), which causes the majority of meningitis cases and deaths in the UK.
Meningitis is still the disease that parents fear the most and it kills more children under the age of five than any other infectious disease in the UK with around 40% of survivors left with life-long after-effects which can be as severe as limb amputations, blindness or hearing loss.
With just one in five UK parents knowing that children under 12 months are at greatest risk of contracting this killer disease it is crucial to know the signs.
