Optic Nerve damage long term

Hi all,

I had bacterial meningitis as in 1999 as a 5 year old.

Fortunantly for me it was caught early but it did impact my coordination, hearing, and vision quite drastically. I have recenlty had an eye scan where they registered what visially looks like some pressure around my optic nerve, the photos I have of the back of my eyes dating back around 13 years show no changes but this is the forst cross section image I have. I have no sysmptoms of pressure aka headaches, dizziness, blurred vision etc .

The optician thinks it is potentially a legacy of meningitis as the photos show a lot of consistencey. I can't find any evidence of the long term effects of Bacterial Meningitis on the optic nerve directly, only the impact of it on the nerve at the time of active illness.

If anyone has experienced anything similar I would love to hear.

Thank you :)

Hi, my daughter had Men B 5 1/2 yrs ago when she was 22.She has been left with some blind spots in her left eye.

No one has given a diagnosis of what the damage is or where (eye, optic nerve or brain), but it did occur when she had the Men B.

Mine is worse in my right eye, but it has generally improved over the past 22 years, I had a lot of optic support via changing glasses every 6 months for about which improved alot for me i had no periferal vision on my right side for about 10 years, i would often cover my right eye with my hand when reading whithout even thinking about it when i was younger because of the strain on my eyes.

It’s good to hear that you’ve had support over the years. When my daughter saw the eye consultant he was not very sympathetic and said she should be happy that she still had one good eye! She still has the problem but her other eye/her brain does compensate for it, which is good as her profession is an artist!
