What's next???

My husband had all the symptoms of meningitis, but I didn't know then that he had it. At first I thought it's just gastroenteritis, but he was ok for 3 days then he had fever again with cold hands and feet, chills and body aches and was moaning and kept turning on the bed. I brought him to ER early morning, sent him home 6pm already. He didn't eat all day while he was there, and he stopped texting me at 1:30, he only that he was sleeping while on the wheelchair. He came out and he looked different, was walking slowly. Lab shows he has infection, prescribed azithromycin, and anti- emetic, sucralfate and antacid. So I thought, ok, so he still has stomach flu. Got home, he threw up. I forced him to eat, has 3 spoons of food, took his meds. He just want to lay down but kept moaning and turning, still has fever, won't tell me what's hurting him, refused to do anything. He will fall asleep then moan and turn again. 5 am, he was on the floor, I can't get him up ( he is 240 lbs) I am only 120 lbs. He can't get up either. I asked if he fell, he said yes. But he really can't stay awake. So I called the ambulance. He started throwing up. His Vital sign were still ok, he was still responding to me with a nod. By 7:30, he was on IV, by 8:30 was on oxygen already and won't respond at all. They won't let me stay with him anymore because of covid. I learned that they did lumbar puncture and CT scan on him and already on catheter, he didn't pee for over 24 hrs, they got 500 ml of urine on him initially. He was unresponsive but restless, nasogastric on his nose, and endotracheal tube in his mouth. By afternoon, he was in ICU. They started him on 3 kinds of antibiotics, did EEG on him and another CT scan the next day. No hemorrhage nor ischemia in the brain, stroke was ruled out. They put him on medically induced coma after he stopped vomiting, and now with ventilator. On the 5th day, he didn't improve. Changed his antibiotics based on the result of Culture and Sensitivity. Did another lumbar puncture and MRI. Lumbar puncture showed no infection already, but seizure on the brain showed on EEG, vital signs were stable. They will wane him off from anesthesia and see what's gonna happen, because CSF showed a neurological disorder. Waiting for MRI result. I'm hoping that he will have minor side effects from this or better yet, none at all.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. My husband had a somewhat similar experience 2 years ago - so scary. My husband is now fully recovered and it's all just a bad memory. In my case, it triggered seizures as my husband has epilepsy but that's a unique situation.

I'm so glad that your husband is doing ok now. My husband still in the ICU, he is no longer on medically induced coma for 6 days now but he is waking up slowly. They did another MRI yesterday to see if there is any damage in the brain. If he will not wake up fully by Friday, they will do tracheostomy on him. He had been on ventilator for 20 days now. He had seizure in the brain when they tried to take him off from sedation after a week, so they put it back, now they are giving him anti seizure med.

Thinking of you. So so sorry. Anti-seizure meds have been a huge help to us. I hope you have some good news soon.

They concluded that he had encephalitis/ meningitis and there was a lesion on the brain stem. They did a trach on him so the ventilator can be move there. He was doing ok breathing on his own after that, he started opening his eyes but he was unresponsive and unable to move. After a week of having a trach, it bled, then he was ok, he was moved to neurological ward. He was breathing normal then, he was breathing heavy, then his oxygen level was going down, even at 10 liters. He was scheduled for MRI again Monday. He slept for 2 days, then on the 3rd day, was a Saturday, he passed away. I don't know when will I be able to move on. I was ready to bring him home, I will take care of him, but I guess he chose heaven.

I had encephalitis its very hard recover from.iam so sorry for your loss.
