Just home after 2 week stay in hospital with meningitis. Iam 38 years of age and have lots of side affects. I know you can get eye issues long term and short term. One of my issues is my left eye looks lazy ( I have had issues with lazy eye before but was treated) will this be temporary ?? as I know you can have nerve damage . I will have eye check in 6 week but need some reassurance?

I had BM in 2017 hospitalized 10 days in United States and 12 weeks pregnant. I had two mini strokes on the left side of my brain which left my right eye droopy but within weeks it was back to normal. It also left a blind spot in my right eye. It has improved but to this day I still have a blind spot due to the nerve damage. It will probably never be back to normal. My eye has adapted to the blind spot. I don’t even realize my eye issue anymore. It affects me the most while driving merging lanes. I go to an ophthalmologist regularly for eye field exams. I’m thankful I had healthy baby and realize it could have been way worse.

Hi there , what sort of medicine doctor run to you. Did you experience any side effect during those consumption please let me if any. Thanks

Cryptococcal meningitis cause me to have 2 small strokes as well as severe hearing loss in both ears, right side of face paralyzed for some time, other somewhat serious side effects, etc. Due to that for some time I couldn't even close my right eye completely and it was annoying waking up each morning with it dried out, crust down my cheek from it, etc. and my eyes aren't exactly the same as they once were in a way. Seems the position of my eyelids has slightly changed and one has a small amount of droop, but visually they are fine. Took some time for the right eye to regain strength and I would constantly purposely close it to regain that movement and it worked. I did get a full eye exam and specifically asked about optic nerve damage and thankfully there is none as you mentioned vision is affected quite often from the pressure/nerve damage. Trust me, it's quite difficult literally waking up to being completely deaf and likely no real fix for it (including implants), but losing vision would've been more devastating. I will say just stay positive, be patient and recovery from this illness (regardless of strain) is very slow, but little-by-little you should see marked recovery and before you know it you'll be looking back thinking 'damn things were rough, but so much better now'... I'm about 1.5 yrs. post diagnosis and back then I was barely existing/bed bound and am thankful for every day I wake up to.

Hi, I had nerve damage made left eye weak, after VM 2015, wore prism glasses to correct for a year , sensitive to light wore sunglasses. Follow up eye apt told me the eyes were stronger the prisms were now the problem. So be aware the fix can become the problem. Good luck & take care it’s quite a journey.

Anything that stresses your body, especially your brain can worsen eye misalignment. You definitely need to get a referral to a specialist in that field- in the US is is called a strabismologist. In the UK it might be an orthoptist or ophthalmologist specializing in eye movements. Don’t worry yet there is plenty of time for this to recover to your baseline.
